BREAKING: Greg Scruggs Resigns As UM Defensive Line Coach
Last weekend, then-Michigan defensive line coach Greg Scruggs was arrested for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated. As a result, UM head coach Sherrone Moore issued an indefinite suspension for Scruggs as the pending legal case continued to play out.
Scruggs’ suspension came to a head today with an announcement from coach Moore, one explaining that Scruggs’ time as a Michigan coach has ended.
“I just received notice that Greg Scruggs has resigned his position, effective immediately,” Moore said in a statement from the school. “I am unable to comment further as this is a University matter.”
Prior to his short stint in Ann Arbor, Scruggs coached at Wisconsin during the 2023 season and worked with the New York Jets a year prior. Scruggs offered a wealth of experience when considering his coaching and playing career, but his time as a Michigan assistant coach has expired.
With Scruggs no longer in the picture, Michigan will look to filling that coaching vacancy. Just yesterday, UM announced the addition of Pernell McPhee to its staff as a defensive support staff role. McPhee, who was an 11-year defensive lineman in the NFL and has a good relationship with UM defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, could assume the open assistant coach position on Michigan’s staff.
It remains to be seen how Moore intends to fill the opening defensive line position as of yet.
