Michigan Football Adds '27 Non-Conference Game With Unique History
Although it's a few years out, we now know who Michigan football will open up the 2027 football season with: Buffalo University.
The Michigan Football X (Twitter) account posted that the Wolverines added Buffalo to the '27 schedule and it appears Michigan will open the season against UB on Sept. 4.
As of now, the only other non-conference game on the 2027 slate is an away game against Texas on Sept. 11.
Michigan and Buffalo have some rich history playing one another and the two teams only squared off one time. Back in 1901. And college football was far from what we know it as today. There were no spread offenses, but run, run, and more running.
Both Michigan and Buffalo were off to hot starts back in 1901 and the two teams met at 4-0 on the year. Michigan had yet to give up a single point all year to the opposition and neither had UB.
On the first possession of the game, Buffalo drove to the Michigan 25, but the drive stalled. And that would be the last decent thing to happen to Buffalo for the rest of the game.
Michigan went on a 128-0 run -- yes 128 points -- and the Wolverines defeated UB 128-0 on that day back in 1901. In fact, Buffalo quit the game with 15 minutes left, or the Wolverines would've put up more points, undoubtedly.
Michigan’s Albert Herrnstein led the scoring with six touchdowns, and additional touchdowns were added by Neil Snow (4), Willie Heston (3), Arthur Redner (3), Curtis Redden (2), and Bruce Shorts.
But it wasn't just Buffalo that received a beatdown from the Wolverines. Michigan went on to win 11 games that season and defeated Stanford 49-0 in the Rose Bowl to go unbeaten. Michigan outscored its opponents that season, 550-0.
