Make Your Pick: Michigan Favored Big Over Minnesota

The Wolverines are sitting pretty at No. 2 in the country and with a 5-0 record. Most expect the maize and blue to be 6-0 after today, but how will it look?

The No. 2 Michigan Wolverines will be on the road again later today against Minnesota, but most don't see much resistance from the Gophers. Jim Harbaugh and Co. have been very business-like through the first five weeks of the season and today should be more of the same.

After starting the season 2-0, the Golden Gophers have dropped two of their last three games - including losses to No. 20 North Carolina and Northwestern.

Michigan, on the other hand, enters the week six matchup ranked No. 2 in the nation and with a perfect 5-0 record on the year. The Wolverines went into Lincoln last weekend and bullied what was supposed to be one of the top rushing defenses in the country. When they weren't punishing the Cornhuskers on the ground, the connection between QB JJ McCarthy and WR Roman Wilson once again proved fruitful.

Defensively, Michigan has yet to allow more than 7 points in a single game through five weeks - and I think that trend continues this weekend in Minneapolis.

Minnesota just doesn't have what it takes to battle Michigan. The Gophers did beat Nebraska earlier in the year, but only by a score of 13-10 at home. Obviously Michigan completed pounded the Huskers last week in Lincoln, so this just feels like a bad matchup for Minnesota. Obviously the transitive property doesn't work in football, but Michigan is built to beat teams like Minnesota. The Gophers want to run the ball, hit play action shots and play stout defense with energy. In essence, they want to be Michigan, but they're not. The Wolverines are too deep, too athletic, too fast and flat out too good for the Gophers.

Michigan finally played a complete games last weekend against Nebraska and I think it will go about the same this weekend. The Gophers might be a little better than Nebraska, but the Gophers aren’t the same team they’ve been the past two years. I don’t see this team winning nine games this year with the lack of QB play to go along with an average defense. Minnesota has trouble stopping the pass and is so-so against the run. The biggest strength for Minnesota this year has been its run attack with freshman, Darius Taylor. However, he missed last weekends game due to an injury and if he does play this weekend, how heathy is he? I got Michigan big here.
