JJ McCarthy Avoiding Roses Until He Celebrates Victory With One

Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy is big on meditation, visualization and manifestation, so because of that, he's not touching roses until he celebrates victory in the Rose Bowl with one.

Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy always seems to say the right thing. When asked about playing in the Rose Bowl, he knew exactly how to put this special experience into words.

"Tremendous honor, all the history behind it. Such a legendary landmark, and to be able to be a part of it in the stage that we're on, it's truly amazing," he said.

McCarthy's run as Michigan's quarterback has been amazing. The junior is 3-0 against Ohio State, has three Big Ten Championship rings and is getting ready to play in his third straight College Football Playoff. But he hasn't been past the first round of those playoffs. Now, he and his teammates will have to beat Alabama to advance and he's as locked in as ever.

"I've dreamed about holding that trophy and dreamed about biting that rose," McCarthy said. "I won't even touch a rose until we get the opportunity to bite into it after a great win."

As for what he's already accomplished, he's not letting himself think about all of that — not yet. He seems to realize that what he's done is special, but he's not ready to daydream in a rocking chair just yet.

"I haven't had time to reflect just yet because I'm focused on the task I'm doing and where I'm trying to go," McCarthy said. "One day I'll look back and reflect on it and watch the highlights and maybe reminisce with the grandkids. Right now I'm busy working, and I'm going to focus on getting better."
