COLUMN: Michigan Football Players Of The Game vs. Bowling Green
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- It was an uncharacteristic game by the Michigan offense on Saturday night against Bowling Green. J.J. McCarthy threw three interceptions and Max Bredeson fumbled a squib kick to total four turnovers on Saturday night.
While the offense struggled, the Wolverines' defense was pretty stifling -- especially against the Bowling Green run. The maize and blue had some broken coverages in the first half, but it was shored up and Michigan allowed just 205 yards of offense to the Falcons.
After reviewing the game, here are the three Michigan offensive and defensive players of the game against Bowling Green.
Offense:
Blake Corum: Michigan totaled 169 yards on the ground against Bowling Green and it averaged 5.4 yards on the ground -- the best in three games. The Wolverines' senior had a very nice outing and Corum looked like his old self against Bowling Green. Corum's vision is unmatched and his cutting was much improved on Saturday night. He ended the evening with 101 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns.
Cornelius Johnson: Roman Wilson continues to bang out touchdowns and he is up to six on the year, but Johnson was arguably the best on Saturday. He led the team with 71 yards on three catches with a touchdown. But it was his touchdown grab that made the night. J.J. underthrew the pass, the defender tapped it in the air, and Johnson had tremendous focus to haul it in after it was bobbled. Johnson now leads all Michigan receivers with 224 yards through three games.
Zak Zinter/Myles Hinton: Got to give props to the right side of the offensive line on Saturday. Michigan flourished when it ran behind Zinter/Hinton. The Wolverines' running backs ran the ball between Zinter and Hinton seven times for 80 yards. Do the math and that's pretty good. Hinton led all linemen with a 74.4 run block grade by PFF and Zinter led all linemen with a 85.7 pass blocking grade.
Defense:
Kris Jenkins: The Michigan interior line has been as good as anyone this season. A lot of their success starts with Kris Jenkins. He hasn't stuffed the stat sheet by any means, but he has been consistent and he got the Wolverines going in the second half after he intercepted a screen pass and took it down to the Bowling Green two-yard line. He also helped out with two tackles and a TFL.
Quinten Johnson: A lot like Jenkins, Johnson was far from a stat-stuffer against Bowling Green, but he did come away with the other interception. Johnson cut in front of a poorly thrown ball in the second quarter to come away with a turnover. Johnson led the entire Michigan team in coverage with a 90.8 grade by PFF.
Mike Sainristil: Talk about a player who is always around the football. Sainristil played nickel and slid over to play some corner against Bowling Green. Three times he came off the edge and recorded a sack, plus two tackles for loss. Sainristil continues to prove how versatile he is and how important he is to this Michigan defense.
