COLUMN: Michigan Football Players Of The Game In Win Against Rutgers
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After a slow start, Michigan picked things up after halftime. After heading into the locker room with a 14-7 lead, Michigan outscored Rutgers 17-0 in the second half to win, 31-7.
The Wolverines are out to another 4-0 start, but this one felt a little different with Jim Harbaugh back on the sideline and if a mistake was made, it was corrected the following drive.
I'm going to list three offensive and three defensive players to the game for the maize and blue after the win against Rutgers.
Offense:
Blake Corum: Corum averaged 4.6 yards per carry yesterday -- nothing overly impressive -- but the senior back showed grit and worked for a ton of his yards. Corum had 50 yards after contact, which is very good when you know he rushed for 97 yards total on Saturday. Corum finished the day with 97 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns on the ground.
J.J. McCarthy: It looked like it may be another tough day for the Michigan quarterback after going 0-2 on the first drive and neither throw was accurate. But McCarthy settled in -- some may of had to do with Harbaugh being back -- and looked like the first two games. McCarthy threaded the needle a couple of times and put his receivers in good spots. He finished the day going 15-for-21 for 214 yards and one touchdown. McCarthy also used his legs -- finally -- and ran the ball seven times for 51 yards.
Colston Loveland: The sophomore had a big game after weeks of the coaches hyping him up. Loveland is an elite player, and maybe one of the best tight ends in the entire country. The coaching staff utilized Loveland's speed and size against linebackers. He led the day with five catches for 75 yards.
Defense:
Mike Sainristil: Is there a better glue guy in the country other than Mike Sainristil? You may be pressed to find one. Sainristil does everything right, and while he took blame for the Rutgers' opening touchdown, he made up for it when he took the lone interception to the house. Sainrilstil had two tackles with an interception and was constantly in the right spots.
Junior Colson: Michigan's tackling machine led the way with six tackles against Rutgers. According to PFF, Colson got the job done by leading the entire team grading out with an 81.5 tackling grade. Colson, along with the D-line, was a big reason why Rutgers couldn't get its ground game going on Saturday.
Derrick Moore: Fans have been waiting for an Edge guy to really step up. Jaylen Harrell has been as solid as they come, but it's starting to look like Derrick Moore is really ascending for Michigan. He was second on the team with five tackles and he also had one TFL. According to PFF, Moore was third on the team grading out with an 80.0 defensive grade.
