Michigan Football: Wolverines Lead The Nation In Scoring Defense

Four weeks into the 2023 season, the Michigan defense is once again proving to be elite under second year coordinator Jesse Minter.

The No. 2 Michigan Wolverines are off to a perfect 4-0 start, and will look to continue their winning ways this weekend in their first road game of the season against Nebraska. Although some questions still remain surrounding the untapped potential of the offense, the Michigan defense has been stellar through four weeks.

The Wolverines currently rank No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 23 total points (5.75 PPG) through their first four games of the season. In fact, the 23 points surrendered are tied for the program's third fewest points allowed in the first four games of a season: 1997 (20 points), 1985 (21 points), and 1974 (23 points).

Here's a look at where the Michigan defense ranks nationally in several critical categories:

  • No. 1 in OPP TDS (2)
  • No. 2 in YPG (231.0)
  • No. 4 in YDS (924)
  • No. 7 in Passing YPG (151.0)
  • No. 12 in Rushing YPG (80.0)
  • No. 2 (tied) in First Downs Allowed (47)
  • No. 1 (tied) in 4th Down Conversion PCT (.000)
  • No. 26 in 3rd Down Conversion PCT (.320)

Michigan defensive statistical leaders through four weeks:

  • Total Tackles: LB Junior Colson (21)
  • Total Sacks: EDGE Jaylen Harrell (2.5)
  • Total INTS: DB Mike Sainristil (2 for 78 yards and 1 TD)

The Michigan defense will have the opportunity to add to its impressive start this weekend in Lincoln, as the Wolverines face a Nebraska offense that ranks No. 89 nationally in total offense, No. 127 in passing offense, and No. 6 in rushing offense.

The game between No. 2 Michigan and Nebraska kicks off at 3:30 pm ET on FOX.
