Five Quick Hits: Michigan Handles Maryland, 38-7
Michigan beat Maryland by the same margin as they did Notre Dame but it didn't feel like as dominant a performance. Either way, U-M is sitting at 7-2 heading into bye week No. 2. Here's a look back at five quick hitters outlining the action.
Player Of The Game
For the second week in a row, I'm giving Player of the Game honors to Hassan Haskins. He continues to ascend and now clearly looks like the best back on U-M's roster. He has a great burst, excellent vision and runs hungrier than anyone else in the position group. Haskins carried it 13 times for 60 yards and a touchdown and also caught three passes for nine yards.
Play Of The Game
It didn't take long for the Play of the Game to occur...
Freshman wide receiver Giles Jackson has been good on kick returns all year and a game-opening, 97-yard return for a touchdown only adds to that. The speedy rookie has made a few plays this year and is likely now playing with more confidence than ever.
Best Freshman
Because of his kick return, it has to be Jackson. He also took a little push pass for four yards and definitely seems to have the juice that made him such a coveted recruit. He's the quickest player on the team and certainly has enough long speed to turn short plays into long ones as evidenced by his return touchdown.
Pleasant Surprise
I'll say the pleasant surprise was kicker Quinn Nordin's appearance and made field goal. It looked like Nordin may have been forced to the bench permanently after starting out the year 0-for-3, but he came in and knocked through a 38 yarder in the fourth quarter against Maryland. I still think U-M should pick just one kicker and roll with him, but it's always good to see a player get off the schneid.
The Bummer
Against a team like Maryland, who has hasn't been able to slow down even mediocre passing attacks, Michigan had just 176 yards passing and the extremely talented wide receiver quartet only had eight catches between them. Juniors Tarik Black, Nico Collins and Donovan Peoples-Jones, along with sophomore Ronnie Bell, only had two catches each and only Collins eclipsed 60 yards. In fact, the other three all finished with less than 20 yards receiving on the day.
