Video & Analysis: Nico Collins Talks 50-50 Balls, Being A Bigger Receiver, More
In a 38-7 win over Maryland, junior wide receiver Nico Collins led the Wolverines with 65 yards receiving on just two catches. Redshirt freshman running back Hassan Haskins actually paced all skill players with three catches but Collins was definitely the biggest downfield threat. After the game he talked about being bigger than most defensive backs and what it means to him to get a chance at making a play on a 50-50 ball. He's also been able to draw several pass interference calls this season and he touched on that too.
Brown's Breakdown
Collins is definitely Michigan's biggest threat down the field because of his size at 6-4, 222 pounds and overall ability to go up and high point the ball with good body control and strong hands. With that said, his 51-yard grab was his only catch downfield against a Maryland team that ranks near the bottom of the entire country against the pass. The Terps also give up big plays at a high clip but the Wolverines were unable to capitalize on that with any of its supremely talented receivers.
It's not their fault either. For whatever reason, Josh Gattis and Michigan refuse to push the ball down the field. It was fine against Notre Dame in a downpour and it also worked out against the Terps earlier today. You just wonder if they'll have it when they need it against a team like Ohio State. I worry about their ability to just turn it on when it hasn't been a part of the offense.
