Michigan Football: Five Incredible Stats Following Saturday's Big Win Over Penn State
If there's one thing we've learned about this Michigan football team over the last ten weeks, is that they're capable of winning a football game by any means necessary.
One of the biggest question marks heading into the top-ten matchup against Penn State was how the Michigan rushing attack would perform against a Nittany Lion defense that was the best in the nation at stopping the run. Michigan responded by not throwing a single pass in the second half, finishing the afternoon with 227 yards on the ground - including 145 yards and two touchdowns from senior running back Blake Corum.
Defensively, the Wolverines were dominant once again. The Nittany Lions average 37.7 points per game, but managed just 15 points against the stingy Michigan defense. PSU quarterback Drew Allar completed less than 50 percent of his passes (10-22), and finished the afternoon with just 70 yards through the air.
Overall, it was another impressive performance for the Michigan Wolverines - a team that has faced no shortage of adversity off the field in 2023.
Here are some of the most interesting takeaways from Saturday's big win in Happy Valley:
- Michigan is 10-0 for the second season in a row. The last time U-M achieved a 10-0 start in consecutive seasons was during a stretch of four straight seasons with a 10 wins through 10 weeks from 1971-74.
- The Wolverines have won 22 straight games against Big Ten opponents, the longest streak in program history.
- Michigan has been victorious in 26 consecutive regular season games, tied for the third-longest stretch in Big Ten history with a streak set by the 1903-05 Michigan teams. Only the 1901-03 Michigan teams, which won 28 straight regular season games, have won more in program history.
- U-M has won 10 straight Big Ten road games (beginning with Penn State, 2021) for the first time since a streak that lasted from 1945-48. There are only six longer streaks in league history.
- Ten weeks into the season, the Michigan defense still has not allowed a single point in the third quarter of play.
Michigan returns to action next week in College Park for a noon matchup with Maryland. With a win, the Wolverines will become the first team in college football history to reach 1,000 program wins. The game kicks off at 12:00 pm ET on FOX.
