Week Eight Stock Report: Ranking Michigan Football's Top 25 Players
Michigan is 5-2 (3-2) after a heartbreaking loss against Penn State in Happy Valley last weekend. The first half was forgettable but the Wolverines battled back and really made a game out of it. With seven games in the books, here's WolverineDigest.com's Stock Report based on in-game performance.
Junior wide receiver Nico Collins led the receiving charge with six catches and 89 yards against Penn State and should've had more. He's been at No. 1 before but it's been a few weeks. He's been solid all year long and, despite pedestrian numbers, is Michigan's best receiver.
Sophomore defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was No. 1 last week and really only slid to No. 2 because Collins was so good. Hutchinson made just three tackles against the Nittany Lions but batted a few balls and has still been very, very good all year.
The other half of salt and pepper, junior defensive end Kwity Paye is all the way up to No. 3 after another outstanding performance. He didn't record a sack against the Nittany Lions but did lead the team in tackles with 10.
Another week, another spot or two up the charts for redshirt freshman linebacker Cameron McGrone. He was second on the team with six tackles and also recorded a sack while flashing the speed and athleticism that has so many Michigan fans excited about his future.
Senior offensive tackle Jon Runyan Jr. is now the highest ranked offensive lineman at No. 13 after stacking several solid games in a row together. He did great job against Yetur Gross-Matos and Shaka Toney during the Penn State game and was a big reason Shea Patterson was only sacked once. It can sometimes be tough to pick out which linemen is performing the best, but Runyan has been as consistent and any of the big boys up front.
Freshman safety Daxton Hill only played 12 snaps against the Nittany Lions and really wasn't utilized how we thought he would be and, subsequently, Penn State wide receiver KJ Hamler had a great day because of it. He's been good but it's hard for him not to slide a bit when he's not able to put his skills on display.
Finally, we welcome redshirt freshman offensive tackle Jalen Mayfield to the list. The big lineman is now at No 23 after a solid game against Penn State, which comes after several other stand out performances. The 6-5, 319-pounder is getting better and better and looks like a future All-Big Ten performer.
