Sherrone Moore Named Finalist For Broyles Award
In what is likely the least surprising news of the Michigan Football season, offensive line coach/offensive coordinator/acting head coach Sherrone Moore is a finalist for the Broyles award, honoring college football's top assistant coach.
Moore stepped into the head coaching role four times during the 2023 season, and the Wolverines went a perfect 4-0 in those contests. Even more impressive, three of his four coaching wins came during the toughest stretch of Michigan's regular season schedule - at No. 10 Penn State, at Maryland, and home against No. 2 Ohio State. The Wolverines now have two top-ten wins on the season, and Sherrone Moore was serving as the head coach for both of them.
Meeting with the media on Monday, head coach Jim Harbaugh discussed just how much Moore means to this Michigan Football team.
“The coaches, the staff — especially Sherrone Moore called a great game," Harbaugh said. "He coached the offensive line and made the decisions as the head coach. I’m not saying I’m in a position of granting who a Michigan man is or isn’t, who a Michigan legend is or is not. I’m not the maker of those two lists. But I have nominated people before, and I nominate Sherrone Moore as a Michigan legend.”
Harbaugh went on to explain what makes Moore such a special coach on this staff, and why Moore is the perfect candidate to lead the Wolverines in his absence.
“It’s one of the toughest and most important jobs of a coach — a leader,” Harbaugh said. “Maybe the toughest part of the job. Having order, discipline, while still having great relationships comes from trust. I trust him because he’s one of the most trustworthy guys I know. Like a brother. And he believes in the players.
“He’s somebody who’s played the game, had to do a job, had to be brave. Players trust him. I knew when it came to situations that he was the guy to empower to make those calls with those chips on the line, because I knew he would trust the guys. Let him take a deep long bow he correctly deserves, and our players, too.”
