Once Again, Michigan Stadium Leads The Nation In Attendance
There aren't many places in the world that can compete with a fall afternoon in the Big House. Hail to the Victors, a sea of Maize and Blue, the iconic winged helmets, tapping the banner - it's an experience that every college football fan should have on their bucket list.
The stadium itself, constructed back in 1927, routinely holds nearly 110,000 fans for each home football game during the fall. Given the dedication of the fan base, along with visiting fans eager to take in the experience, it's no surprise that Michigan Stadium had the highest attendance in the nation this season.
The Big House had an an average attendance of 109,971 fans, while the total home attendance for the 2023 season was a whopping 769,797 fans. To this date, Michigan Stadium still holds the record for the largest crowd to attend a football game on campus, drawing in 115,109 fans for Michigan's 2013 matchup against Notre Dame.
The 2016 matchup between Tennessee and Virginia Tech currently holds the overall record for single-game attendance at 156,990 fans, but that game was played in Bristol (TN) inside of a Nascar venue.
There's no doubt that Michigan Stadium is one of the toughest places in the country to win a football game if you're the visiting team, especially these days. In fact, the Wolverines haven't lost a game in the Big House since the shortened COVID season in 2020. Over the last three seasons (2021-23), Michigan is an impressive 19-0 inside of the Big House - including 2-0 against Ohio State.
