Michigan Football: 'The Game' Will Feature An Elite Battle
Although it's still a little over four months away, fans from both the state of Michigan and the state of Ohio are already looking forward to that last weekend in November. For the Wolverines, they're looking to make it three straight wins over the Buckeyes in their quest for a third consecutive Big Ten Championship and trip to the College Football Playoff. For Ohio State, it's about trying to change course and regain control over the rivalry after two heartbreaking losses - including a blowout loss in Columbus last season.
There will certainly be no shortage of intrigue when the two programs meet on Nov. 25 in Ann Arbor. Jim Harbaugh's legacy, Ryan Day's legacy, a place in the Big Ten championship game and a spot in the college football playoff are all on the line, as is often the case. Within the game, however, will be an incredible matchup between two players who are projected to be high first round NFL Draft picks: cornerback Will Johnson vs. wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
For Michigan, it didn't take long for Will Johnson to live up to his five-star billing during his first year in Ann Arbor. The 6-2, 194-pound true freshman appeared in all 14 games and made five starts at cornerback - including starts against Ohio State and TCU in the CFP Semifinal. He notched a career-high in tackles against Ohio State (8) and interceptions against Purdue (2) in the Big Ten championship game.
Following the 2022 season, Johnson was named Freshman All-American by Pro Football Focus, 247Sports and the Athletic - while also earning Michigan's Defensive Freshman of the Year honors. Johnson was so impressive during his freshman year that some analysts were projecting that he would have been a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Fortunately for Michigan, Johnson won't be eligible for the draft until 2025, meaning the Wolverines will get at least two more seasons out of the elite corner.
For Ohio State, Marvin Harrison Jr. is unquestionably one of the best receivers to come through Columbus. In fact, the junior wide out is already projected to be the highest-drafted wide receiver since Calvin Johnson was selected No. 2 overall in 2007. The 6-4, 205 pound wideout is already drawing some impressive comparisons, with NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah seeing shades of A.J. Green and Andre Johnson - two players that were known for having an elite combination of size, speed, and athleticism.
Here's a sample of what Jeremiah had to say about Harrison:
Harrison has everything you look for in a No. 1 wide receiver. He has a big frame, outstanding speed and natural hands. He has a unique blend of power and grace. He can win right off the line in his release whether he's using pure speed or simply swatting away cornerbacks with his hands. He changes tempo in his routes down the field and can access another gear when the ball is in the air.
He tracks the ball easily over his shoulder on deep balls and is adept at adjusting to throws on his back shoulder. After the catch, he has the speed to pull away or he can use his lower body strength to break tackles. His competitive nature showed up through the entire season.
This years late November matchup between Michigan and Ohio State will undoubtedly be must-see TV, with both programs projected to enter the game with an unblemished record and national championship aspirations. While there's no shortage of things to keep your eye on, the matchup between Michigan's Will Johnson and Ohio State's Marvin Harrision Jr. is certainly at the top of the list.
