When West Bloomfield (Mich.) specialist Tommy Doman Jr. committed to Michigan back in April, it was clear that the Wolverines had landed one of the top kickers and punters in the nation. And after several days of competition at the Chris Sailer Top 12 camp down in Dallas, Doman reaffirmed that assessment.

Going head-to-head against some of the top specialists in the country, Doman pieced together several days of quality work to earn his place among the Top 12 participants of the offseason camp.

“The Top 12 camp was a great couple days of competing and training,” Doman told Wolverine Digest. “We had to choose one of the kicking duties to focus on so we could compete for the spots of the Top 12. I believe I punted well these couple days.”

In fact, Doman received top honors as the best punter of the group for two of the three days at the Top 12 camp. This outstanding performance locked Doman in as one of the best competitors in attendance and etched his name in a long line of quality specialists to do so.

“At the end of the camp, I was very proud to be the first member of the Top 12 announced because of the previous specialists, 30 NFL starters, that have been in my position,” Doman said.

But the positive news for Doman does not stop there. Shortly before the camp began, Doman was selected to the MaxPreps first-team All-America list as a punter as well, so the Michigan commit is stockpiling awards before the 2020 season begins.

“One of my friends was looking at the MaxPreps list while I was at my recent camp and told me I was named the first-team punter, and I was super excited,” Doman said. “I was not only excited to be named to the pre-season team but excited to prove that honor correct by also going for the first-team All-American punter after the season.”

Over the offseason, Doman has been working hard to boost his skill set and to come into the season in the best physical shape that he can. For the U-M pledge, that means spending a lot of time in the weight room and on the practice field.

“I have gained about 10 pounds, and I have seen a lot of progress in the weight room,” Doman said. “On the field, my consistency has gone up a lot. I am punting the ball 10-15 yards further and outside the numbers consistently. I have become better with pin punts from my own 40, putting it in the coffin corners. Kickoffs and field goals have been going good as well. I am hitting kickoffs 10-15 yards further, and my hang times have gone up.”

As Doman continues to put his best foot forward, the preseason accolades that he racks up should not come as much of a surprise. According to Luke Radke, who helps run the Kohl's Kicking Camps that Doman has competed in for several years, the MaxPreps preseason All-American has what it takes to make an impact at Michigan early on during his collegiate career.

“Tommy is a guy who will compete his butt off, work real hard and compete to be a starter year one,” Radke told Wolverine Digest. “I think he has the ability to be a really good punter and kickoff guy year one, and I think field goals, if he wants to focus on that, he could probably compete for the job early in his career as well. He is very, very well rounded.”

Until the time comes for Doman to strap on the winged helmet, look for him to keep refining his game and working to be the best punter and kicker that he can be so that he'll have an opportunity to compete for a job at Michigan from the get go.
