Michigan Lands In-State Four-Star
Just one day after National Signing Day in the 2023 class, Michigan has added to its 2024 class in the form of Harper Woods (Mich.) High athlete Jacob Oden.
The 6-1, 188-pounder announced his commitment live on YouTube and took to Instagram to let the social media world know that he is now a Wolverine. Oden picked U-M over Michigan State, Penn State, Iowa and Tennessee — the other four schools from his top five. All in all, the versatile defensive back reeled in more than 35 offers during his recruitment.
Oden is the son of Rod Oden, the current head coach at Harper Woods and former head coach at Detroit Crockett and East English Village Prep. Being the son of a coach always seems to be a good thing. Players who have dads in the coaching world just seem to get it in a way that others don't — the work ethic necessary, the off-the-field work required, the sacrifice and the job-like approach needed to truly succeed at the highest level.
Oden is listed as an athlete because he really can play just about every position in the defensive secondary. At 6-1, 188 pounds, he's got great length and size for a cornerback. If he were to grow a bit and add some weight, he'd be perfect at either safety position. If he doesn't bulk up too much, he already possesses the quickness and technique to play nickel. He also make a lot of plays on offense at wide receiver. He truly is a jack of all trades back there, which is why he was able to reel in nearly 40 offers before his senior season.
