Spartan Baseball Crushes Notre Dame, 20-3

MSU scores a school-record 20 runs against the Fighting Irish.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Michigan State baseball team collected season highs in hits and runs on Wednesday night as the Spartans crushed Notre Dame, 20-3, at Frank Eck Stadium. The 20 runs are also a school record for Michigan State against the Fighting Irish.

Senior first baseman Jeff Holm tied career highs with four hits and six RBIs, while Torsten Boss went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. MSU (32-18) had 26 hits in the contest.

In addition, Justin Scanlon tied his season high with four hits, Andy Johnson and Brandon Eckerle each collected three hits, and Seth Williams blasted a three-run homer.

Notre Dame (21-25-1) took an early 3-1 lead after one inning of play, but the Spartans broke the game open with 14 runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, including a six-run fifth.

On the mound, freshman Zak Wilkerson (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings and allowed just two hits to earn his first collegiate victory.

The first-place Spartans return to action for a three-game series (Thursday-Saturday) against Northwestern as they look to capture their first Big Ten title since 1979. The series gets underway Thursday at 3:05 p.m. at McLane Baseball Stadium.
