Bucciferro throws complete-game shutout.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -Spartans downed Notre Dame, 3-0, to complete a three-game sweep of the Irish. The Spartans are now 12-4 on the season and are unbeaten in their last six games.
“We’re playing well defensively, getting good pitching and we’re getting some timely hits,†said MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. “It’s tough to win and sweep on the road. We feel good about the weekend but realize we have a long way to go and we’re hoping to build momentum before conference games start.â€
For the second consecutive day, a Spartan starting pitcher threw a complete-game shutout, as Bucciferro followed A.J. Achter who blanked the Irish in the fi st game of a doubleheader on Saturday. Bucciferro has now thrown complete-game shutouts in his last two starts.
“Tony was outstanding today,†Boss said. “He was throwing strikes and kept his pitch count low which allowed him to go the distance.â€
Jeff Holm, who finished the day 3-for-4, gave MSU the only run it needed with a double that scored Brandon Eckerle in the fi rst inning. Holm picked up his second RBI of the day in the top of the third inning when he again drove in Eckerle, this time with a single through the right side of the infi eld. On the next at-bat, an error by Notre Dame allowed Bo Felt to reach and allowed Jonathan Roof to score and make it 3-0.
With all the run support he needed, Bucciferro cruised for the remainder of the game as he sent the Irish down in order in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings and didn’t allow a walk until the ninth.
The Spartans will look to extend their winning streak when they begin a four-game set with Oakland on Friday at 3:05 p.m. at McLaneBaseball Stadium.
