BREAKING: Tom Izzo, Michigan State land son of NBA star in 2024 recruiting class
Excitement is at a fever-pitch for Michigan State men's basketball's 2023-24 season, which is set to begin with the Spartans' first scrimmage later this month. However, head coach Tom Izzo and his staff continue to build for the future as well.
On Sunday, Michigan State received a commitment from four-star Miami (Fla.) Columbus combo-guard Jase Richardson, the son of decorated former Spartan, Jason Richardson.
Richardson, who had offers from 14 high-major programs, chose the Spartans over fellow finalists Alabama and Cincinnati. He is considered the No. 35 overall player, No. 3 combo guard and No. 8 player from the state of Florida in the 2024 recruiting class, according to 247Sports composite rankings.
Jason Richardson played two seasons at Michigan State under Izzo from 1999-2000. He was a key reserve when the Spartans won the national championship to conclude the 1999-2000 season, and led MSU in scoring the following season while leading the Spartans to another Final Four appearance in 2000-2001. Richardson was the fifth overall selection in the 2001 NBA Draft, and played 14 seasons of professional basketball in the NBA.
Now, 22 years later, Jason's son has committed to play for his former college coach in East Lansing.
Michigan State now has three commitments in its 2024 class, as Richardson joins four-star Havervill (Mass.) Bradford Christian Academy shooting guard Kur Teng and three-star Cleveland (Ohio) Lutheran East power forward Jesse McCulloch.
