Coming off an uninspired victory over Toledo in which Tom Izzo had a mini meltdown for his teams’ lack of passion, today had an entire different feel. After the game he was quick to acknowledge that different feel, “Really pleased with my teams unselfishness today.”

Valpo is a better team than Toledo and with legendary coach Dr. Homer Drew they came in ready to play. A fact that Izzo mentioned when he said, “They (Valpo) are a very well coached team.’

Valpo has made a lot of major schools nervous by being a disciplined three-point team. Fortunately for MSU they were not hot from the three today. As basketball followers know, three point shooting teams live or die by it, and it cost them today.

They shout a porous 17% from the three-point arc, and the scoreboard said they lost by 30, had they been hot it could have been a lot closer.

Chris Allen was the star today for MSU scoring 22 points. Kalin Lucas was once again the masterful captain of the ship, leading the Spartans up and down the court and directing traffic, he had 15 points and three assists.

Coach Drew said about the Spartans, “They completely dominated us. They imposed their will on us.” That pretty much sums it up. Coach Drew knows good basketball and I asked him to asses the #2 Spartans as far as how he thinks they match up nationally. “They are definitely a legitimate number one team,”

What made the game special was seeing Delvon Roe and Raymar Morgan back and playing more like they can. A factor that a smiling Izzo after the game couldn’t help but expound on, “Delvon getting 17 rebounds…and it was nice to have Raymar back.”

The Spartans now move on to Atlantic City, NJ. They will face the Florida Gators on Friday at 8PM and the winner of the Rutgers vs. UMASS game on Saturday. Spartan Nation will be at both games so stay tuned for complete coverage.

Today was Izzo’s 340th career win. That ties him with legendary Jud Heathcote as the number one in wins on the Spartans all time win list. “I think that this will please Jud that his hand picker successor achieved this.” One thing is certain it pleases the Spartan Nation. Congratulations Tom!
