Although Springfield (IL) Sacred Heart Griffin 2019 offensive lineman Nick Broeker already held a number of offers, last month’s offer from Michigan State still came as a bit of a surprise to him when #5 Michigan Statewide receivers coach Terrence Samuel visited Broeker in school to extend the offer in person.

Spartan Nation recently caught up with the 6-foot-5, 280-pound 3-star standout to discuss his offer from the Spartans and Broeker said he was caught off guard when he saw Samuel in school, but was obviously excited to find out about the offer.

“I was in class and Coach Samuel told me, actually, he’s my area guy,” he said. “He told me at school, so that was really exciting, I didn’t expect it because some schools will tell you that they’re coming, but I didn’t realize he was coming. It was my free period and I saw someone sitting in the office and then he stood up and I saw the Spartan logo and I was like ‘Oh, that’s awesome’ and he broke the news right away. I was really excited.”

Along with his offer from Michigan State, Broeker holds offers from Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Rutgers, Purdue, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Kansas and several others.

Broeker said that considering Michigan State was one of the teams he watched growing up, receiving an offer from the Spartans was a significant one for him.

“It was a big deal,” he said. “Growing up, that’s definitely a team that I watched on Saturdays. It’s a very high level. So it was just a dream come true in a sense.”

While Broeker has yet to visit East Lansing, he told Spartan Nation he would like to get on campus in the near future.

A two-sport standout as he also plays basketball for his high school, Broeker said that he believes the Michigan State coaching staff likes his athleticism for his size and also likes the fact that he comes from a winning high school program.

“They like how athletic I am and how limber I am for a guy my size,” he said. “And coming from the school that I play at, we produce really good players and we just win a lot. Coaches like that about us, that we always win and they want winners on their team.”

One of the aspects of visiting Michigan State that Broeker is most looking forward to is having the opportunity to speak with Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio,

“Of course, he’s a great coach and the team always seems to do well,” he said. “So that will be really exciting.”

Broeker also noted that he plans on making his college decision before the start of his senior season, which begins in late August.
