19 IN OL Damon Kaylor In-Depth On Why He Chose MSU
After taking a visit to East Lansing earlier this week, Huntington (IN) North 2019 offensive lineman Damon Kaylor had plenty to think about regarding Michigan State and just one day later, the 6-foot-6, 315-pound offensive lineman felt he had seen everything he needed to see and officially committed to #5 Michigan State.
Spartan Nation recently caught up with Kaylor to talk about his decision and the 3-star recruit said that after a long night of discussing his options with his family, he again through it over the next morning and decided to inform offensive line coach Mark Staten and head coach Mark Dantonio of his commitment.
“I just got done visiting Michigan State the day before and I talked it over with my parents all night,” he said. “That morning, we talked it over even more and I called Coach Staten probably at 11:00 and said I wanted to be a Spartan and called Coach D after that and let him know too.”
Before choosing Michigan State, Kaylor held 16 offers in total, including offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Indiana, Vanderbilt and Virginia.
While there were plenty of things that stood out to Kaylor about Michigan State, he said that the biggest factor in his decision was his relationship with the coaching staff, particularly Staten.
“I would say the coaching staff,” he said. “I like coach Staten a lot, he has a blue-collar background and he’s someone I could really see myself playing for.”

Kaylor also noted that his parents also liked a number of different things that Michigan State had to offer, but most importantly, they were impressed by the academics side, particularly the business school.
“You have to get the academics and education first before football even comes in and that’s something about Michigan State that my parents really approved of,” he said. “The business school, where it’s ranked, I think it’s 37th or so, and that’s something that they really liked about it. Another thing about Michigan State was just the coaching staff and how I fit in overall.”
Kaylor is a versatile offensive lineman who could play any number of positions along the offensive line but said he expects to learn more of where the coaching staff envisions him when he camps at Michigan State next week.
As far as what he feels the coaching staff likes most about him, Kaylor said that his work in the weight room, as well as his athleticism, are parts of his game that stands out the most.
“The biggest thing I think they were impressed by was just my work ethic in the weight room and just how well I can bend and how well I move in general,” he said. “One specific thing, on my squats, coach Staten during the visit period, about a month ago now, came to watch me work out and was taking videos of me doing squats and was sending them to coach Mannie to see how well I could bend. They were impressed with my flexibility and how I can move.”
