19 MI DL Maverick Hansen Recaps Stellar MSU Camp Performance!
While Farmington Hills (MI) Harrison’s Maverick Hansen has been recruited as both an offensive and defensive lineman, it became clear last week that the 2019 standout was being looked at as a defensive end by #5 Michigan Stateafter a stellar performance at the Big Man Camp.
Spartan Nation caught up with Hansen following his time in East Lansing and the 6-foot-3, 267 pounds said that he was pleased with his effort at camp and also said that he had the opportunity to meet with head coach Mark Dantonio afterward.
“I don’t even know how to explain it, it was great,” he said. “It’s definitely an honor talking to coach D, not many people got the opportunity that I did, so I definitely feel blessed about that.”
In that meeting with Dantonio, Hansen said that he was told that while he doesn’t hold an offer from Michigan State as of yet, the Spartans will continue recruiting him moving forward as a defensive lineman.
“He told me that they’re going to continue to recruit me,” he said. “They do have commits on the o-line, so I definitely have to start progressing more and more as a defensive lineman. It really excited me that he said that because I love both sides of the ball, so that’s fine.”
Hansen currently holds offers from Iowa State, Syracuse, Central Michigan, Bowling Green, Ball State, Kent State and Morgan State.
His visit to East Lansing for the Big Man Camp was a part of Hansen’s college tour as he also had planned visits to Maryland, Tennessee, Syracuse, Rutgers, Colgate, and Cornell.
One of several moments that Hansen caught the attention of the Michigan State coaching staff was during the bench press, where he had 15 reps of 225 pounds, an effort that impressed Strength and Conditioning coach Ken Mannie, a moment that was understandable exciting for Hansen.
“Definitely,” he said. “Especially coming from someone like him.”
As far as his work ethic and competitive nature is concerned, Hansen said that it’s something that comes from his family and are traits that he’s learned from his parents.
“I definitely have a hard, working-class family, my mom makes everything happen for me,” he said. “Not all of my family members are close, but we make the best of it. My dad is blue collar, so we just put the work in and I know it takes to put hard work in and I definitely get my personality from my family.”
