19 OH LB Luke Fulton Talks OV To Michigan State This Weekend
Youngstown (OH) Cardinal Mooney 2019 3-star linebacker Luke Fulton has been one of the most sought-after players in the 2019 class as he currently holds 16 offers and will be on campus in East Lansing this weekend for a visit to #15 Michigan State.
Spartan Nation caught up with Fulton ahead of his highly anticipated and the 6-foot-3, 215-pound linebacker said that he hopes to speak with the Michigan State coaching staff and get a good feel for Michigan State’s campus and facilities this weekend.
“When I come up this weekend, I’m just looking for good time to spend with the coaches and to be able to really hear them out and get to know them better,” he said. “I also want to see the place, I want to see everything they have to offer, their facilities and everything that’s going on there.”
Since the start of the 2018 calendar year, Fulton has received eight of his 16 offers and holds offers from Syracuse, Boston College, Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, Cincinnati, and Rutgers.
On the football field, Fulton has built a reputation of being a sure tackler and a hard hitter and said that his style of play comes from his love for the game of football, which is something that you can see when watching him on film.
“There’s nothing I like more than playing football,” he said. “You can tell by my tape, you can see sometimes after I make a big play, I seek that contact whenever I can get that, it’s the biggest high I can get. I love it.”
That physical, aggressive style that Fulton plays with is one that him drawing comparisons to linebackers like Chris Spielman and A.J. Hawk, who got their start playing high school football in Ohio.
“That’s an honor, I just love to hear things like that,” he said. “That kind of stuff motivates me to really try and develop myself to the fullest and try to complete something like that in my career, to work to that point.”
But while Fulton has established himself as one of the top linebackers in the Midwest, the 3-star recruit also takes pride in what he’s accomplished off the field and in the classroom, where he holds a GPA of over 4.0 and understands the importance that academics will play in his life after football.
“Academics is very important to me,” he said. “I carry a 4.17 GPA right now and if you’re going to be continuing your football career, but while it’s going on, you need to be getting that education that can continue through your next 40 years of life. I really do believe that strongly.”
When it comes to Michigan State, Fulton said that he appreciates the interest the Spartans have expressed in him and said that it’s a program that he would like to play for down the road.
“The attention that I’m getting from there is great, it’s definitely a school that I would love to play for,” he said. “Michigan State is always a big-time competitor, they pull out big wins all of the time and they’re a great program.”
Fulton said that his main recruiters have been co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Jim Bollman, as well as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Mike Tressel.
“I figured that they liked me a lot, but once I saw coach Tressel in person, I was like ‘Oh wow’,” he said. “And he told me he really liked me and that just meant a lot.”
Fulton also said that he knows current Michigan State running back L.J. Scott, who played his high school football at Hubbard high school, which isn’t too far from Cardinal Mooney, where Fulton plays.
With Scott passing on entering the NFL draft and choosing to return to Michigan State this fall, Fulton told Spartan Nation that he believes that proves what kind of place East Lansing for players like Scott to choose to come back for another year.
“I think that’s a great sign,” he said. “That shows how much those guys love the place and how much it means to them and it’s a really good sign that people invest in the program and love it that much.”
Although Michigan State has not extended an offer to Fulton as of yet, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound standout admitted that an offer would put the Spartans at the top of his list when it comes to schools he’s considering at the moment.
“A Michigan State offer would mean everything,” he said. “It would immediately be right there at the top of my list and it would be a school that I would very seriously consider and love to play for.”
“I think that’s a great sign,” he said. “That shows how much those guys love the place and how much it means to them and it’s a really good sign that people invest in the program and love it that much.”
