19 OH WR Cameron Phillips Talks Michigan State Spartans
After a strong junior season at the high school level, which helped lead to a handful of offers, Westerville (OH) Centralwide receiver and defensive back Cam Phillips has continued to receive plenty of interest from Division 1 programs, including #15 Michigan State.
Spartan Nation recently spoke with Phillips about his recruitment as well as Michigan State and the 5-foot-11, 180 pound standout athlete said that he likes what he sees from the Spartans.
“I love what they’re doing, all of the coaches, all of the things that they have,” he said. “I like how the coaching staff is really steady and everything, it seems like none of them are going to be leaving any time soon. I’m definitely talking to coach Samuel and he’s liking the speed that I have and the ball abilities that I have.”
So far in the recruiting process Phillips holds offers from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Kentucky, Illinois and Rutgers and has also received interest from Arizona, Oregon, Penn State, Indiana, Michigan and Michigan State.
When it comes to the Spartans, Phillips said that he hears from wide receivers coach Terrence Samuel and newly named defensive coordinator Mike Tressel and both have spoken to him about playing on offense and defense.
“Coach Tressel and coach Samuel have been talking to me about playing both sides,” he said. “Coach Samuel comes in and talks about the offense and coach Tressel comes in to talk about me playing as a DB, so they’re talking to me about both.”
Phillips also said that the Michigan State coaches have told him that they like several different aspects of his game and that his skill set could help him excel at the next level on either side of the ball.
“They like my ball skills for sure,” he said. “My athletic ability, on the offensive side, how I can come in and out of my breaks and my route running. On the defensive side, they like how I can pass down on a wide receiver and my athletic ability and how I can play anywhere.”
While nothing is set in stone as of yet, Phillips told Spartan Nation that he believes he will be camping at Michigan State over the summer.
While the Spartans haven’t extended an offer to Phillips yet, the 3-star recruit said that an offer from the Spartans would mean a lot to him.
“It would mean a lot,” he said. “They’re one of the top programs in the country and I’d love to get an offer from them.”
As far as what stands out to Phillips about the Spartans, he said he likes their physical brand of football and feels that Michigan State’s physical, but smart approach is similar to his style of play.
“I think they’re real physical and they play real smart,” he said. “They don’t make many mistakes, it’s just real good, tough football.”
But the Spartans are one of many Big Ten programs showing interest in the 5-foot-11, 180 pound athlete right now as Phillips has also taken an unofficial visit to Michigan and said he enjoyed spending time with Wolverines’ head coach Jim Harbaugh.
“I love coach Harbaugh,” he said. “When I went there for an unofficial, I had a good time with him. He’s a cool guy for sure.”
Another school that Phillips has visited recently is Penn State as he visited the Nittany Lions for a game this past fall and admitted he was impressed with the environment and atmosphere on gameday.
“It’s a nice place, great atmosphere,” he said. “I went to one of their games and had an awesome time.”
While he has also received interest from Indiana, Phillips said he doesn’t know much about the Hoosiers as of right now, but is planning on taking an unofficial visit to Bloomington this spring.
An excellent student, who just finished last semester with a 4.4 GPA and would like to major in business, Phillips said that he doesn’t have a set date as to when he wants to make a college decision, but would like for that to take place either before or after his senior season.
