While he has been a coveted recruit for some time, Irwin (PA) Norwin 2019 safety Jayvon Thrift is starting to hear from Big Ten programs as he recently picked up an offer from Indiana and has received interest from several other conference teams, including #5 Michigan State.

Spartan Nation recently caught up with Thrift to talk about his recruitment and the 5-foot-11, 190 pound defensive back said that while he doesn’t hold an offer from the Spartans as of yet, he would have serious interest in Michigan State if he received an offer.

“I would be very interested in a Michigan State offer,” he said. “I really liked Michigan a lot when I went up there.”

Along with his recent offer from the Hoosiers, Thrift also holds offers from Pittsburgh, Syracuse, West Virginia, Buffalo, Temple and Toledo.

As far as his latest offer is concerned, Thrift said that he came away impressed with Indiana after a recent visit and enjoyed his time with head coach Tom Allen.

“I really like the Hoosiers, I was talking to coach Allen and he said that they’re looking for a guy to come up and have a good feel for the game and be a team player,” he said. “I really like it up there, just the environment, the coaches and they’re on the rise on defense and on offense. That’s a good school.”

Thrift also said that he’s high on his home-state team, Pittsburgh, and feels at home with the Panthers and spoke highly of current head coach and former Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi.

“I really like the Panthers,” he said. “It seems like a good, home environment because it’s close to home. Pat Narduzzi is really like a father figure, he just treats the kids like they’re his own kids. It’s a good family environment down there.”

When it comes to Michigan State, Thrift has already been on campus for a 7-on-7 showcase and said that he would consider attending Michigan State’s elite camp, if he receives an invite.

But with another year of high school football left before he heads to the college level, Thrift said that while he feels he plays the run well, he wants to continue improving his coverage skills and his speed, even though he has been timed at 4.58 in the 40-yard dash.

“I feel like I play the run well and make the big plays when they’re needed,” he said. “I feel like I need to get better a little bit, coverage-wise and maybe speed a little bit too, but other than that I’m pretty much rounded.”

With plenty of time left before he needs to make a decision, Thrift, who plans on committing before or during his senior season, said that he’s simply focused on finding a school where he would fit well and help him reach the professional level.

“I’m just looking for the school that wants me,” he said. “I just want to fit perfectly there and ball out and go to the next level.”
