19 TX DB Elijah Coleman “I would love to play at Michigan State”

After establishing himself as a top defensive back in the state of Texas with the help of a strong junior season in 2017, the Rockwall 2019 cornerback Elijah Coleman has seen interest in him pick up in recent months.
Spartan Nation recently spoke with Coleman about his recruitment as well as his play on the field, where he’s built a reputation of being a hard-hitting, physical defensive back.
“You’ve got to get nasty,” Coleman said of his style of play. “You’ve got to get in their faces, you can’t be soft as a corner.”
From his cornerback position, Coleman registered 19 pass breakups and an interception in his junior campaign in 2017.
Coleman credited the mentality that he plays with as something that has helped lead to his on-field success throughout his high school career and added that he’s the type of player who doesn’t look back at mistakes, but just focuses on what’s next.
“You’ve always got to look forward, you can’t look in the past and as a corner, you have to live by that,” he said. “There’s going to be some plays that aren’t going to go your way, but whatever, it’s on to the next play and you have to make that play.”
While Coleman has emerged as a top defensive back, the 6-foot-1, 165-pound standout also takes pride in his accomplishments off the field and in the classroom, where he carries a near 4.0-grade point average.
“Academics is very important to my family,” he said. “All through elementary school and middle school I’ve had straight A’s and now, sitting here as a junior, I have a 3.925 GPA.”
#15 Michigan State is one of a handful of schools that have been expressing increased interest in Coleman recently and Coleman admitted that he would jump at the opportunity to play for the Spartans if he were to receive an offer and said that the idea of playing for a school up north doesn’t faze him.
“I would take it, I would love to play at Michigan State,” he said. “I was actually born in Minnesota, so the north cold isn’t anything to me. I would love to play for Michigan State.”
