20 MI LB Garnett Davis III Recaps MSU Visit
Although he hasn’t received an offer as of yet, Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary’s 2020 linebacker Garnett Davis III is receiving plenty of interest from #5 Michigan Stateand a handful of other Division 1 programs.
Davis, who was recently on campus in East Lansing for a spring practice and the Green and White Spring game, spoke with Spartan Nation and said that he enjoyed his visits and liked the home-like atmosphere he experienced.
“It was really nice there, the campus is really beautiful and the people are nice there,” he said. “I liked the weight room, everything up there was nice and it felt like home. I like the academics there and it was just really nice.”
While he plays both running back and linebacker at the high school level, Michigan State has mainly recruited Davis to play linebacker so far.
When taking in the spring practice, Davis said he liked how the coaches worked with the Michigan State players and also liked how practices were run.
“I liked how the coaches were coaching,” he said. “They were really hands on and really descriptive with the players. It was a solid practice, everything was moving pretty smooth and I liked the way they practiced too, it was a lot like my high school. It felt natural with the way the practice was flowing and in the spring game. The played seemed pretty cool, I met L.J. Scott and it just felt like a good place to be around with a lot of good people to be around.”
For Davis, it’s still very early in his recruiting process, and while he hasn’t been offered by Michigan State yet, a potential offer would mean a great deal to him.
“It would be an absolute blessing and an honor just to know that they would want me to be there and be a future Spartan,” he said.
Davis told Spartan Nation that he plans on making a return trip to Michigan State this summer for a camp.
As far as what Davis can do on the field, the 5-foot-10, 205 pound standout said that while he considers himself to be a good run stopper from the linebacker position, he remains focused on improving his all-around game.
“I’ve been doing 7-on-7’s and I’ve been working on my pass coverage, but mainly I think I’m a good run-stopper,” he said. “I’m 15 right now, I’ll be 16 in September, so I still have a lot of growing to do and I’m just working every day to get better.”
As far as where Davis specifically wants to improve, he said that he needs to get better at shedding blocks and wants to become more of a leader as he enters his junior season this fall.
“Most definitely getting off of blocks,” he said. “I could have definitely had a lot more tackles just getting off of blocks and disengaging from the guards and tackles coming off of me when they’re running. Speed is definitely another big key, obviously, you want to be faster and as fast as you can. Other than that, just energy and and bringing more motor to my teammates and being a better teammate by helping my teammates get better playing on the field.”
