Delton Williams is a big, fast powerful running back. One of the most popular Spartans in the locker room this rugged runner who attacks like a linebacker at 6’1” and 230# needs to be on the football field. To put it simply he is a football player.

That is why when Mark Dantonio released his spring depth chart seeingWilliams name as the first string fullback was not a surprise to those in the know with the program. Williams is still listed on the depth chart at RB as well, but with Gerald Holmes, L.J. Scott and Madre London also on that list MSU had to find a creative way to get him on the field.

Dantonio talked about his move saying, “You know, we have three tailbacks with experience, obviously four when you count Delton. Delton is a good football player. He's a big guy. I think he can make that transition to the F, and we'll see how that works out. But I think he's a football player. I think we have to give him the opportunity to show that. He demonstrated that his first two years, and so this is where we're at right now. Doesn't mean he does not play tailback, it just means that he has an extra opportunity there.”

Williams sat out significant time last off season for an unfortunate off the field issue, but was returned to the roster prior to the start of the season. A story Spartan Nation broke. A condition of the return was Williams coming off of his athletic scholarship.

Williams has paid his price and in my opinion should be returned to his scholarship. I asked Dantonio about it, “Delton will go back on scholarship in the summer.” That is great news.

So while the Spartans have a lot of questions in 2016, they have plenty of weapons and talent to fill the voids. The experiments of spring are what makes football teams in the fall great and what makes covering spring football so exciting.
