EXCLUSIVE: 5 * Devontae Dobbs On Why He Chose MSU!
It’s no secret that Belleville (MI) 2019 offensive lineman Devontae Dobbs has long been a coveted recruit for Mark Dantonio and #5 Michigan State and the Spartans got some good news earlier this week as the 6-foot-4, 304-pound, 5-star standout became Michigan State’s 11th commit in the 2019 class.
Spartan Nation caught up with Dobbs to discuss his decision to choose Michigan State and Dobbs said that after weighing his options, he felt East Lansing was where he wanted to be.
“It was just all about the schools and the pros and cons,” he said. “I already knew that I was probably going to be going there because previously, we would be on road trips and we would be talking about schools and people would be talking about Michigan State and I would catch myself considering Michigan State more. It was just something that really came back and when it was time to make a decision, I knew where I wanted to be.”
Before choosing the Spartans, Dobbs was one of the country’s most coveted recruits as he compiled 30 offers, including offers from Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Auburn, USC, Michigan, Arkansas, LSU, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, and Wisconsin, along with several other Power Five schools.
Upon telling Dantonio the news of his commitment, Dobbs said that Dantonio was obviously excited and thankful that Dobbs chose Michigan State over some of the country’s top programs.
“He was pretty excited,” he said. “He wanted to make sure that this is really what I wanted to do and he was just thanking me for having trust in him and his staff.”
Dobbs also noted that when he arrives on campus in East Lansing in 2019, he’s looking forward to working with offensive line coach Mark Staten both on the field and off.
“I think he’s great, I think I’m going to learn a whole lot from him, inside and outside of football,” he said. “I think he can make me a better man and a better player.”
The Spartans now have four offensive line commits as Dobbs joins Mentor (OH) guard Nick Samac and Huntington (IN) North tackle Damon Kaylor and Walled Lake (MI) Western tackle Spencer Brown, who Dobbs is already close with.
Considering his already strong relationship with Brown, Dobbs said that he’s looking forward to playing alongside him at the next level and envisions both players as leaders for the Spartans in the future.
“You’ve already got that chemistry,” he said. “When you’re comfortable, it’s good to check each other and you can help each other lead and compliment each other and make each other better.”
Now that Dobbs is officially committed to the Spartans, he said that the fact that the coaching staff gave him space and time to make his decision and didn’t pressure him into rushing his college choice did play into his decision and helped him feel more comfortable with the Michigan State coaching staff.
“It means a whole lot,” he said. “With sports, I could just let it come naturally and it came naturally and I felt really comfortable with the coaching staff.”
