Word is out and the Spartan Nation isn’t happy about it. The word around East Lansing is that Michigan State Athletics is thinking about a logo change from the traditional Spartan logo to a new more modern “tough” guy. The pictures of the logo were released to the Lansing State Journal recently and there is a ton of negative sentiment. As far as I can tell, the new logo isn’t an improvement. It is change for the sake of making a change.

With Michigan State continuing the need to draw more revenue from its core revenue sports, this is probably a way to look at making more money by expanding eye appeal nationally. Who cares that they piss off more than a quarter of a million alumni. That hasn’t stopped them from ruining the university’s core landgrant based programs or turning away more native Michiganders in favor of international students with a bigger wallet. Why should they care if they mess with our classic Spartan that adorns the MSU football helmet? It would only make sense.

The reality is that MSU needs to abandon the new Spartan logo idea. The logo change is a flakey move by the university. Consistency, tradition and a classic look will do more for the school than this latest stunt that looks more like something the Oregon Ducks would pull.

If you think about the identity of the most marketed college athletic programs in the country they all have consistent trademarks and logos. The Notre Dame ‘block ND’, the ‘winged-helmet’ from our big sisters down the road, the Southern Cal ‘Trojan logo’, the generic red Nebraska ‘block N’ and the longhorn that represents Texas are just a few of the classic more recognizable symbols in college sports. If MSU would stick with the classic Spartan instead of demoting it and promoting it with every coaching change in favor of the ‘block S’, it too would become a classic college icon. If it were more a part of the basketball uniform, it already would be.

The bottom line is that Michigan State needs to leave the Spartan logo alone. Stop spending money to have a new one designed. This is a bad idea to say the least. Bad business ideas and MSU have grown synonymously over the years. You can throw the Spartan logo change right into the same bucket as let’s build a campus in Dubai. Wow, the brilliance of higher education.
