Michigan State Wins Battle For FCS All-American Offensive Tackle Transfer

The Spartans land one of their top transfer portal targets at a position of need...

Earlier this week, Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith said he wasn't sure if the Spartans would add any more players through the transfer portal before the spring window, due to classes already beginning this semester at MSU.

However, just two days later, Michigan State landed one of their top targets at a position of need in Holy Cross graduate transfer offensive tackles Luke Newman. In addition to MSU, Newman had offers from Vanderbilt, Illinois, Purdue, Wake Forest, Kentucky and several other power conference offers.

Newman played his high school ball at Bloomfield Hills (Mich.) Brother Rice, and returns home for his final season of eligibility following a four-year career with the Crusaders. The 6-foot-4, 310-pounder appeared in 38 career games at Holy Cross, settling in to a starting role at left tackle. Newman had a decorated career with the Crusaders as a multi-time All-American and All-Patriot League selection.

Newman is now set to conclude his college career with the program he grew up rooting for, as both of the his parents attended and graduated from Michigan State. The senior will likely play guard next season for the Spartans, though could also be option at tackle given his skillset and experience at the position.

With Newman in the fold, Michigan State offensive line coach Jim Michalczik has landed his second transfer O-lineman this offseason in East Lansing. Earlier this month the Spartans landed former Oregon State offensive guard Tanner Miller out of the portal as well.
