BREAKING: Michigan State Football Adds 2nd Transfer Quarterback
After all three scholarship quarterbacks from Michigan State football's 2023 roster entered the transfer portal this offseason, new head coach Jonathan Smith's overhaul of that position group appears to be complete.
On Sunday, the Spartans landed a commitment from transfer QB Tommy Schuster, a highly-experienced, four-year starter at North Dakota (FCS) who entered the transfer portal following this past season.
Schuster is just the type of quarterback Michigan State was looking for to fill out the position group heading into 2024. The 6-foot, 195-pounder will provide competition for Oregon State transfer QB Aiden Chiles in the spring and perhaps fall camp, and gives Smith and Co. an experienced veteran likely to backup Chiles.
Schuster appeared in 45 games during his five-year career at North Dakota, including 42 starts for the Fighting Hawks. He's thrown for 9,075 yards and 63 touchdowns while completing 843-of-1,252 pass attempts (67%) during his career. He's thrown 23 interceptions at the college level, averaging 5.5 per season as a starter. Schuster has also rushed for 175 yards and five touchdowns on 193 carries.
In the week following Smith's hire, Michigan State saw the departure of redshirt junior Noah Kim (Coastal Carolina), redshirt freshman Katin Houser (East Carolina) and true freshman Sam Leavitt (Arizona State) via the transfer portal. Smith's rebuild of the Spartans' QB room began with bringing along Chiles, a former Top 75 overall prospect, with him from Oregon State. MSU then added two three-star quarterbacks, Alessio Milivojevic and Ryland Jessee, to its 2024 recruiting class.
With Schuster in the fold, the Spartans will carry four scholarship quarterbacks into the 2024 season. Chiles has a high ceiling as a dual-threat playmaker, Schuster provides experience and past production, while the two high school prospect provide depth to build upon.
