Michigan State Loses Another Wide Receiver To Transfer

The Spartans' roster turnover this spring continues...

Michigan State's football program has experienced a plethora of roster moves since the end of spring practice, and that continued on Monday when another wide receiver announced his intent to transfer.

Redshirt senior Cade McDonald, who walked on at MSU in 2019, is headed to the Mid-American Conference. The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder announced via Twitter that he will spend the final two seasons of his collegiate eligibility with the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks.

McDonald graduated from Michigan State this past weekend and, while the spring transfer window closed on April 30, graduate transfers are allowed to enter the portal at any time during the year.

McDonald, a native of Naperville, Ill., was a high school teammate of both former Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne and wide receiver Jayden Reed. Thorne, of course, recently announced his intent to transfer to Auburn and Reed was drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, No. 50 overall, by the Green Bay Packers.

After redshirting in 2019, McDonald played the subsequent three seasons for the Spartans, recording five catches for 46 yards and helping out on special teams with five punt returns for 43 yards.

McDonald is the fourth Michigan State wide receiver to depart the program since the end of the 2022 season. He joins rising-junior Keon Coleman, who has yet to announce his final transfer decision, as well as rising sophomore Germie Bernard (Washington) and rising junior Terry Lockett Jr. (Eastern Michigan).

Michigan State and wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins are expected to add at least one wide receiver out of the transfer portal before the start of the 2023 college football season.
