MSU Football Freshman Suffers Knee Injury, Undergoes Surgery

It appears Michigan State will be without one of its four-star freshmen for the 2023 season...

Mel Tucker and his Michigan State coaching staff have placed a larger emphasis keeping players healthy throughout this offseason and fall camp but, unfortunately, injuries are a part of the game.

On Wednesday night, former four-star offensive line prospect and current MSU true freshman Stanton Ramil revealed via Twitter that he has suffered a right knee injury which required surgery. Given the fact that Tucker and Michigan State usually keep injury information tight-lipped, Ramil's announcement likely indicates that the freshman will not play for the Spartans this season.

"A big thank you to the team of nurses and my surgeon Dr. Jildeh for preforming a successful surgery," Ramil wrote on Twitter. "A special thanks to the volunteer greeter who sat with my parents and kept them company during his lunch break.

"Lastly, I would like to share my appreciation not only for the MSU coaching staff who has been by my side this whole time, but also the trainers of MSU athletics that are helping me through this recovery process. It only goes up from here! Excited to support my brothers this season, and to get better! I’ll be out there soon! Go green! God is Great."

Even a fully-healthy Ramil likely would have taken a redshirt season in 2023, however, the injury is still unfortunate. True freshmen can play in up to four games while maintaining a redshirt, and it's possible Ramil would have gotten some playing time this year.

Michigan State offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic was highly complimentary of Ramil and fellow 2023 O-line signee Cole Dellinger during spring practice in March.

"I have a hard time thinking of too many freshman in my whole career who have come in, mastered the playbook, and really played well," Kapilovic said, indicating Ramil and Dellinger had done those things.

Ramil was the fourth-highest rated signee from the Spartans' 2023 recruiting class and pulling the native of Alabaster, Ala. out of the South was a major win for Tucker and Kapilovic on the trail. The Spartans held off multiple late charges from SEC programs to land the No. 222 overall player and No. 17 offensive tackle prospect in the class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings.

“One of the best offensive linemen in the country, two-time state champ,” Tucker said of Ramil on National Signing Day last December. “He comes from a big family, looks to make an early impact. … Really good size, athleticism."

Michigan State will kick off its season on Sept. 1 when the Spartans host Central Michigan at 7 p.m. at Spartan Stadium. The broadcast of the game will be carried by FS1.
