5 Recruits Who Could Commit To Michigan State Football In July

Can the Spartans continue a good summer of recruiting this month?

Mel Tucker and Michigan State football had a strong month of June on the recruiting trail, reeling in verbal commitments from seven prospects in the class of 2024.

That group of recent pledges was headlined by four-star Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day running back Anthony Carrie and three-star Westwood (Mass.) Xaverian Brothers quarterback Henry Hasselbeck. The Spartans also strengthened their offensive line haul by adding three-star twin brothers Mercer and Charlton Luniewski out of Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy.

On the defensive side of the ball, Michigan State loaded up on secondary talent with commitments from three-star Dayton (Ohio) Centerville safety Reggie Powers, three-star Syracuse (N.Y.) Christian Brothers Academy cornerback Syair Torrence and three-star Tampa (Fla.) Bay Tech cornerback Camren Campbell.

With that, MSU's 2024 class ranking rose to No. 52 in the country, and Tucker's staff is on the verge of adding more high school talent during the month of July. Here are five high school prospects who could commit to Michigan State this month.

3-Star Providence (R.I.) La Salle Academy CB Justin Denson

Denson, the No. 1 player from the state of Rhode Island, was scheduled to announce his commitment on July 1, but that decision got delayed following travel complications. He's now set to announce on July 4.

Michigan State, Oklahoma and Florida appear to be the favorites for Denson. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder took official visits to all three of those schools in June, with the Spartans getting the last OV before his announcement. After adding three defensive backs in the 2024 class in June, adding Denson would be another nice victory for MSU cornerbacks coach Jim Salgado and safeties coach Harlon Barnett.

Denson is ranked No. 613 overall and the No. 57 cornerback in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings.

4-Star River Rouge (Mich.) WR Nick Marsh

This has been a recruitment anyone associated with Michigan State has been watching closely for months. Marsh originally committed to the Spartans back in July 2022, but decided to re-open things this March and make sure he was making the best decision for his future.

It's been a heated race to land the nation's No. 100 overall player and No. 16 wide receiver ever since with Penn State, Pittsburgh, Kansas and Oregon are making their pitch to try to sway Marsh away from the Spartans. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder will make his decision on July 7, and while Michigan State appears to be in the pole position following Marsh's official visit to East Lansing on June 23, this will continue to be a battle throughout this week.

Penn State was once considered the favorite here, but it now appears that Pittsburgh is the top challenger for Marsh, who's considered the No. 3 player from the state of Michigan in this class.

4-Star Los Alamitos (Calif.) LB Kamar Mothudi

It will be tough to pull this California kid away from the West Coast, but Michigan State has done just about everything possible to do so. Following a June 9 official visit to East Lansing, Mothudi said Michigan State "shattered" his expectations.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder also took visits to Utah, Washington and Oregon during the month of June, and the Ducks currently hold two crystal ball predictions in their favor ahead of Mothudi's tentative announcement date of July 10. Expectations should be tempered with this recruitment, but MSU linebackers coach Scottie Hazelton has the Spartans at least in striking distance here.

Mothudi is considered the No. 217 overall prospect, No. 19 linebacker and No. 19 player out of California in the 2024 class.

3-Star Shelby (N.C.) Crest WR Javarius Green

Michigan State has yet to land a wide receiver in its '24 class, and Nick Marsh is not the only Spartan target set to announce a decision this July.

Green is a smaller target at 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds, but he makes up for that with speed and elusiveness on the gridiron. This appears to be a battle between MSU, North Carolina and Alabama. Green took official visits both to East Lansing (June 9) and Chapel Hill (June 23) last month, while taking an unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa as well.

The hometown Tar Heels are the favorite to land the No. 24 player from North Carolina, but MSU wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins will continue to work on Green over the next two weeks ahead of his July 18 decision date. It'll be interesting to see if Marsh's decision will impact Green's recruitment one way or another. Green is considered the No. 768 overall player and No. 100 wide receiver in the 2024 class.

4-Star Seattle (Wash.) O'Dea RB Jason Brown

We mentioned in the opening that Michigan State had already landed one four-star tailback in the '24 class, and the Spartans could be on the verge of a future dynamic duo in their backfield.

Brown took only one official visit this summer, and it was to East Lansing. While the nation's No. 92 overall player and No. 9 running back could take more OVs this fall, Michigan State has built some early momentum here, after two crystal ball predictions were submitted in favor of the Spartans following Brown's visit.

While he's not announced a top group nor a commitment date, Brown could be ready to make a decision this summer. Schools that have separated themselves in his recruitment include Michigan State, Alabama, Georgia, Texas, USC and Washington.
