Onward Christian Soldier: Mark Dantonio Looks to Add Key Player for 2010 Class in Glennville, OH DB Christian Bryant!

It is no secret that the 2009 Spartans are lacking talent in the defensive backfield. It is no secret that you address football needs in recruiting and the Spartans have put a lot of effort in time in trying to lure a star.

That star is Christian Bryant. The multi-skilled DB came up to camp at MSU and wowed coaches and players alike. One player at the event who did not get an MSU offer told Spartan Nation, “It would have been hard to get one (scholarship offer) today. There was Christian Bryant and the rest of us.”

Those accolades are exactly why defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi has been on a mission to secure a commitment from this true star. Many believe that he would be the best pure DB prospect the Spartans have secured in years if they could land him.

You CAN CLICK HERE to watch my interview with Bryant from late this summer.

Bryant is a true shut down corner who has superb technique and talent. It has been rightfully said that although a CB has to be fast, superior speed can be trumped with superior technique and Bryant possesses textbook skills.

The Spartans in 2009 have lacked CBs that can play the ball in the air. Although great at staying on the hip of the wide receiver, adjusting to and playing the ball in the air have made the Spartans defensive backfield woefully inadequate. Bryant has no such issues. In fact, he is considered (by some) to play the ball in the air superior to any MSU CB on the roster right now.

Spartan Nation visited Bryant and his family at his home in Cleveland earlier this summer and came away impressed with Bryant’s maturity and understanding of the game of football. “I want to get better. I want coaches that will push me, and that is what I like about Michigan State. They spend a lot of time getting to know the player as a person and that means a lot to me. Talking to players from there says a lot and they really love that staff.”

Sources close to Bryant tell Spartan Nation that the choice for Bryant has come down to MSU and Ohio State in all reality. In fact, according to a source at Bryant’s school, “I can tell you that when he talks with me, he only speaks about MSU and Ohio State."

Bryant would vault near the top of the MSU commit list for the 2010 class should he give Coach Dantonio and DC Pat Narduzzi that call saying he is ready to be a Spartan. Bryant would have a great chance of getting immediate playing time next season for the Spartans, and for any recruit to step into a Big Ten program that is on the upswing like the Spartans that has to be a big factor.

Bryant is a good student with a GPA of 3.3 and off the field is a super young gentleman. As the Spartans make their final push for a significant 2010 class, Bryant could be an incredible addition to an already deep class that is expected to get much deeper by signing day.
