February is whizzing by! There isn’t a lot of time for teams to try and win their conference championships and get healthy for a run in March. Between now and the beginning of the tournament, many teams will dream sweet dreams of hoisting that Michigan shaped trophy. Unfortunately, only four teams will experience the thrill of victory. Too many other teams will taste the sour agony as they take off their uniforms, possibly for the last time in their life. All they will be able to do is pack away the jerseys and pull out the baseball bats or start breaking in their track cleats. This week’s action didn’t have too many crazy things happen, but it’s always interesting to see what’s going on in hoops action!

High Score of the Week

Morenci 86 Sand Creek 80 (166 points)

It wasn’t an easy game, but Morenci pushed it to overtime and then outscored Sand Creek 18-12. Clayton Wolf scored 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds while his teammate Brett Bovee scored 22 as well and also tossed seven assists. Jordan Niell scored 24 points for Morenci and grabbed 12 boards. Brandon Ohlinger scored 22 and also had eight assists. Luke Craig had 19 points, including five three-pointers.

Saginaw Valley Lutheran 86 Bay City All Saints 80 (166 points)

It was a high scoring game for these two teams. Many of the points came from behind the three point arc. James Rogers scored 28 points, including six three point shots, to help his team win the shootout. Kaleb VanAmburg scored 25 for the Chargers and five players scored in double figures. Justin Villano led the Bay City All Saints Cougars with 22 points. Adam Pijaszek scored 20 in the losing effort.

Low Score of the Week

Lansing Sexton 40 Jackson Northwest 11 (51 points)

I guess that this game was so bad, that nobody wrote about it. Doesn’t sound like an overly exciting game, especially when you lose by more than three times the amount of points you score.

Coach Cottrell’s Blowout of the Week

Lansing New Covenant Christian 79 Battle Creek Calhoun Christian 24 (55 points)

Like a typical CCBotW, the game started out quickly for one team, held strong through halftime, and ended up a blowout. Lansing New Covenant Christian had a commanding 41-16 lead the half and cruised to victory. Mark Fitch scored 23 points for New Covenant and led all scorers. Michael Hirschi had 18 points. For Battle Creek Calhoun Christian, Young led the team with eight points. He was followed by Perkins with 6. Calhoun scored two points in the entire fourth quarter.

Appling is Mr. PSL

Not only did Keith Appling’s Detroit Pershing defend their Detroit Public School League championship with an 82-67 victory over Detroit Cody, but he was also named Mr. PSL; the top player in the league. He scored 21 points. In their victory over, Juwan Howard scored 21 points as well and also pulled down 18 rebounds and blocked four shots. Richard Carter scored 26 in the losing effort. Cody trailed six points in the third, but only went six of 26 shooting in the third quarter and the game slipped away.
