Spring practice is especially important for teams with a lot to work on.

Following back-to-back losing seasons, Michigan State needs to work at 110% to try and show the world why it should not be counted out. With only a few practices until the spring showcase game on April 20, Michigan State looks to be improving by the way coach Jonathan Smith Smith describes the season so far. With the conference getting harder this upcoming season with the addition of four teams, two of which were in the top six this past year, Michigan State needs to do extra scouting and preparation.

Smith told reporters on Tuesday that the freshman class is looking promising and making some big plays in practice, proving it can be the face of the rebuild.

"I don't know if I came in with a huge expectation one way or the other; pleased with the work ethic, and you're always trying to add to your talent," he said.

Smith seems pretty happy with the team's work. The progress being made is a monumental step in the right direction, and over the next few years, the Spartans really could reclaim their spot as a top team in college football.

Smith talked about how well the offensive line has been adjusting to the completely new scheme and putting its faith in the new coaches and the new game plan. Alongside the offensive line's progress, Spartan quarterback Tommy Schuster has been performing really well. He makes impressive throws, does not throw over the receiver and understands the offense very well.

With an older quarterback in the room, quarterback Aidan Chiles should gain considerable experience and knowledge from Schuster.

Michigan State's running backs are all getting handoffs this spring, but Jalen Berger and Nate Carter are leading the way. After a lackluster rushing performance last year, Michigan State looks to up the intensity this year. The offensive line is going to play a vital role in the run game, and the new scheme might make that possible.

Michigan State was bottom five in rushing last season and needs to fix that if it wants to improve.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
