Joe Rossi, Michigan State's new defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach, had some uplifting words in an interview recently. He said he is delighted with how things are going at practice, and his guys are committed to getting better every day and doing what it takes.

Joe Rossi spent six seasons as the Minnesota Golden Golen Gophers DC and linebackers coach and helped Minnesota become one of the more robust defensive units in a problematic Big Ten conference. The key to a good defense is being deliberate and intentional about what you're doing, said Rossi. Rossi remained humble, pointing out how some plays need work and improvement and praising the good plays and good tendencies being developed.

Rossi has the perfect sense of coaching by the fact that even though things have been going well he is more focused on how can they be better, how can they be perfect? With a coaching staff focused on getting better rather than being good, Michigan State can make the improvements they need.

Rossi's big thing is improvement; he talks about how you must constantly think about improving yourself. Coach Rossi is happy with the unit he came into coaching, and he has many experienced guys who know what they're doing and can lead the team.

New schemes shouldn't be an issue for this Michigan State team as the coaches have made it clear it is working well and will surprise a lot of fans.

Third-down coverage and red zone defense are the most significant pieces of defense, and perfecting those things is critical to winning a football game. Rossi thinks that, given the way the team is playing right now, that shouldn't be much of an issue.

Rossi, being a linebacker coach and a defensive coordinator, is pleased with his linebacker group and how they are developing and working. With all the praise given to the backers, secondary, and line, it seems that the Spartan defense is looking good again and can maybe start to see some big stops in big games.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
