Michigan State Coach Jonathan Smith Offers His Spring Practice Update
The Michigan State Spartans are approaching the spring showcase game on the 20th, and with only a few practices left, Coach Jonathan Smith breaks down what the team has been working on recently and what's to come.
Coach Smith discussed alongside secondary coach Blue Adams and offensive line coach/run game coordinator Jim Michalczik that they have recently implemented the red zone offense. There have been many good plays on both sides of the ball, and the offense is looking pretty efficient down inside the 20-yard line. Smith is pleased with the effort that the guys have been putting in and their commitment to making it to everything and working hard.
In terms of defense the secondary is doing well and making improvements as well as handling the new scheme very well. A team completely restructuring its game strategy on both sides of the ball is a big step and it takes full commitment and patience from every member of the team offense and defense, starter or backup, everybody needs to have it down.
The receiving core adapts reasonably well and progresses significantly with the new quarterback play. The offense looks very sound and robust, and a new, proven coach and an experienced lineman at Tanner Miller lead the offensive line.
"O-line, Jim does a good job mixing the o-line in different spots, they're learning and growing there. We been pleased with the understanding, kind of learning the receiving group in general, brand-new offense, a lot thrown at them and they've handled it well. So there's been progress." Coaches seem pretty happy with how things are going, which is a good sign for Spartan fans.
This upcoming season adds two especially high powered offenses into the mix being Oregon and Washington but given that the Michigan State coaches that came from Oregon State have faced off against these teams multiple times makes it a little easier but it will take a lot more than just solid spring practice and adjusting to new schemes to make a stand in the new and improved Big Ten.
The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
