Allyssa DeHaan Named Detroit Athletic Club’s Michigan Female College Athlete of the Year

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women’s basketball standout Allyssa DeHaan was named the Detroit Athletic Club’s Michigan Female College Athlete of the Year, as announced by the DAC today.

 

DeHaan and Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour, the Male College Athlete of the Year, along the high school honorees, will be recognized on Monday, May 10 at the National Athletic Awards banquet at the Detroit Athletic Club.

 

The Michigan College Athlete of the Year award is presented to a student-athlete that performs at a high -level athletically and academically, makes an impact in his/her community, and demonstrates leadership and sportsmanlike behavior. As part of her honor, the DAC will donate $2,500 to the Michigan State athletic department.

 

DeHaan joins Drew Stanton (2007) and Jeff Lerg (2008) as previous Michigan State winners of this prestigious award.  

 

DeHaan, one of four team captains, became the fifth Spartan All-American, earning honorable mention recognition from The Associated Press. A four-time All-Big Ten selection, she earned second team honors this season for the third time in her prestigious career. DeHaan also was the first MSU player to be named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and was the first Big Ten player to be a four-time selection to the conference’s all-defensive team. 

 

Overall this season, DeHaan led the Spartans with 10.6 points and 3.1 blocks, and was second with 5.8 rebounds. She was also sixth in the conference with a team-best 82.7% free throw percentage.

 

For her career, DeHaan is fourth all-time at Michigan State with 1,649 points and 919 rebounds, becoming only one of three Spartans to rank in the top-five in both categories. Earlier this season, DeHaan broke the NCAA Division I blocked shots record and ended her career second all-time with 503. She also set the Michigan State games played record with 136 and ended up third at MSU with 128 starts.

 

A Dean’s List student and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, DeHaan has a cumulative 3.43 grade point average, while majoring in human biology. After graduation in December, she aims to attend medical school and pursue her dream of becoming a pediatrician. 

 

DeHaan has been an active member in the Michigan State University and Greater Lansing community since her arrival on campus. Along with her teammates, she has helped build working relationships with most notably the MSUCHI (Michigan State University Children’s Health Initiative), Sparrow and W3 (Women Working Wonders) foundations, in addition to going to events with fellow Spartan student-athletes through the MSU Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) department. DeHaan is also active in Michigan State ’s Athletes in Action (AIA) program.

 

Incoming women’s basketball recruit Madison Williams is a finalist for the high school award.
