EIGHT MICHIGAN STATE GYMNASTS ALL-AMERICANS
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Eight members of the 2018 Michigan State gymnastics team have been named Scholar All-Americans by the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA).
Ashley Beatty, Gabriella Douglas, Anna Gamelo, Jessica Ling, Lea Mitchell, Madison McHale, Molly Hoerner O’Malley and Victoria Huehn were all recognized for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the 2017-18 academic year.
Meeting the required 3.5 grade-point average (GPA) or better required, 760 (55%) student-athletes earned Scholastic All-America honors. The percentage of women’s collegiate gymnasts honored last year was 47.83%, and the previous high was set in 2015-16 with 49% of student-athletes earning a 3.5 or better GPA.
Gamelo, Hoerner O’Malley, Ling and Mitchell were four of the WCGA’s record number of student-athletes – 118 (8.54%) – who earned a 4.0 GPA this year. This number has steadily risen since 2008 with 101 (7.68%) reaching academic perfection last year and 97 (7.52%) in 2015-16.
A senior experience architecture major from Toronto, Ontario, Gamelo led MSU with a 4.00 GPA. In addition to being a two-time WCGA Scholar All-American, Gamelo also earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten accolades.
A junior from Farmington Hills, Michigan, Hoerner O’Malley is an advertising management major and had a 4.00 GPA. Hoerner-O’Malley was also an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
A native of Walled Lake, Michigan, Ling is a junior majoring in kinesiology and also had a 4.00 GPA. Along with being a two-time WCGA Scholar All-American for the second year in a row, Ling also earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honors. Academic All-Big Ten recognition this season.
A freshman from Boynton Beach, Florida, Mitchell is majoring in journalism and also had a 4.00 GPA.
Beatty, a freshman undeclared major from Macomb Township, Michigan, had a 3.75 GPA.
Douglas is a native of Mississauga, Ontario and is majoring in kinesiology, with a 3.88 GPA. She garnered Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honors.
McHale is a freshman undeclared major from Naperville, Illinois, and has a 3.42 GPA majoring in hospitality business.
Huehn is a senior English major from Ann Arbor, Michigan, with a 3.65 GPA. She also earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten accolades.
The WCGA is the advocate for women’s collegiate gymnastics. Until this month, the coaches’ association was known as the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women.
