Michigan State Women’s Golf Earns Bid To NCAA Central Regional

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women’s golf team has earned a berth in the NCAA Central Regional as a No. 4 seed, the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Committee announced Monday afternoon. The Spartans will head to Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind., May 6-8 for regional action. This marks the 12th consecutive year MSU has made postseason play.

 

“We are thrilled to be staying near home,” said MSU women’s golf head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. “It’s really a reward for our season to be playing in the Central Regional. We’re excited about getting to regionals, but really, those are our standards as a program. It’s instilled in our players. We feel confident in our chances of advancing to the NCAA Championships – our goal all season has been to finish in the top 10 at nationals.”

The NCAA Women's Golf Championships are divided into three regional sites and conclude with the finals May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. Each regional site hosts 24 teams and three individuals, with the top eight teams and two individuals in each region advancing to the finals.

The complete field for the Central Regional (in order of seeds) is as follows: Arizona State, USC, Purdue, Michigan State, Georgia, Denver, New Mexico, Florida State, Oklahoma State, Louisville, Oregon, Kent State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Mississippi, San Diego State, Baylor, Tulsa, North Carolina State, Indiana, Illinois State, Murray State, Detroit and Jackson State.

Indiana University will serve as the host of the Central Regional at Otter Creek Golf Course.

MSU enters the NCAA Central Regional after placing second at the Big Ten Championships over the weekend in Madison, Wis. The Spartans, ranked No. 13 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, have won three tournaments this season (Mary Fossum Invitational, Tar Heel Invitational, Gator Invitational).

The Spartans are led by 2010 Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Year Laura Kueny. Kueny placed third at the Big Ten Championships, her best career showing at the event, and was also named first-team All-Big Ten for the third straight year. Kueny’s stroke average of 73.40 is on pace to set the MSU single-season record (previous best: 74.09 by Sara Brown in 2007-08).

Junior Aimee Neff earned second-team All-Big Ten honors for the third consecutive season following her 11th place finish at the Big Ten Championships, and freshman Caroline Powers tied for 16th in her first career appearance at Big Tens. Junior Natalie Brehm and sophomores Lindsey Solberg and Shannon Warner also were in the lineup for MSU at the Big Ten Championships.
