MSU AD Announces Comprehensive Review of Booster Clubs

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State Athletics Director Mark Hollis announced Thursday, March 31 his plans to conduct a comprehensive assessment of third-party MSU booster club organizations. In addition, Hollis announced the elimination of the 50/50 raffle at Spartan Stadium for the 2011 football season. This is in part due to the Downtown Coaches Club financial reporting process and a current review being conducted by the Michigan Lottery Commission.

“We are reviewing the practice of booster club activities, including 50/50 raffles, that take place in all of our venues and off-campus,” Hollis said. “We’ll also take this opportunity to evaluate and define the roles of booster clubs in their support of individual teams.

Â

“As a department, it’s important to be inclusive, providing opportunities for everyone that wants to engage with Spartan Athletics. Historically, booster clubs provide a valuable opportunity for individuals to come together and collectively support MSU and specific sports.

“The Spartan Fund is the organization for charitable giving to MSU Athletics, as its donors directly provide the financial resources and support for our 25 sports and some 750 student-athletes. Our challenge is maintaining one focus for the Athletics Department while supporting each individual sport.”

As part of the evaluation process, Hollis will address the membership of the Downtown Coaches Club at its previously-scheduled spring luncheon, set for Friday, April 29 at the Eagle Eye Golf Course.
