BOCA RATON, Fla. – Senior Lindsey Hansen became Michigan State softball’s all-time home run leader when she blasted her 32nd career home run during game two of MSU’s final day in Boca Raton, Fla., for its of its annual spring trip. The Spartans (14-10) opened the day with a come-from-behind win over Rutgers, 4-2, before downing host Florida Atlantic on Sunday, March 13, 7-3.

Seventh-inning heroics from Hansen gave MSU a three-run inning and propel it to a 4-2 win. Hansen doubled to left center to score both sophomore Kylene Hopkins and junior Lori Padilla. Hansen wound up scoring the third run of the inning when junior Brett Williams grounded out to second to bring home Hansen.

The Scarlet Knights got on the board in both the first and fourth innings with a run in each inning. Loren Williams struck first with a double down the line in left to score Jen Meinheit for the 1-0 lead.

The second Rutgers run was tallied in the bottom of the fourth when Mickenzie Alden singled up the middle to drive in Lindsey Curran, giving the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 advantage.

Michigan State cut the lead in half when senior Heidi Purtzer scored as sophomore Jenny Ramsaier was being thrown out at second by the catcher. Ramsaier was attempting to steal second when she was tagged out by the shortstop, allowing Purtzer to advance home on the play and bring the score to 2-0.

Freshman Cassee Layne threw a complete game for the Spartans and improved to 5-6 on the year. Layne struck out two of her 30 batters faced and allowed five hits. Rutgers scored two runs on Layne, both of which we earned.

Abbey Houston took the loss for the Scarlet Knights in her 3.0 innings of work. Houston allowed three earned runs on five Spartan hits to fall to 3-6 this year.

Hansen did not waste any time etching her name in the record books as she hit a deep shot to left field in the first inning for her 10th homer of the season, giving the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.

Ashlyn Parmerter tied the game up at one for Florida Atlantic in the top of the second when she hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Jordan Stovall from third.

Hopkins helped MSU regain the lead in the third with a single up the middle to score Purtzer. Hansen recorded another RBI when she singled to right, driving home senior Karen Fox. The Spartans ended the inning with a 3-1 lead over the Owls.

A single by Brittany Walker in the fifth knotted the game back up at three each when she put the ball down the left-field line for two RBIs, scoring Quincy Wilson and Hailey Broyles.

Junior Lauren Kramer, who was MSU’s starting pitcher against FAU, blasted a grand slam to center to score Hansen, Hopkins and Fox for the game-winning runs.

Kramer improved to 6-3 on the season with her complete game against the Florida Atlantic. Kramer tossed six strikeouts, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits.

Rose Gressley fell to 6-7 this season for FAU. Gressley allowed seven runs, five earned, on nine hits while striking out five batters.

The Spartans conclude pre-season tournament action March 19-20 when it travels to Bloomington, Ind., for the Hoosier Classic. MSU will be joined by Central Michigan, Wright State, Eastern Michigan and Loyola. The Green and White begin the weekend with a 12:15 p.m. game against the Chippewas.
