Desmond Young Joins Women’s Basketball Staff as Assistant to the Head Coach

Young comes to MSU from the Duquesne men’s staff.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State head women’s basketball coach Suzy Merchant announced Wednesday the addition of Desmond Young to the support staff as Assistant to the Head Coach.

“We are thrilled to welcome Desmond back home to the state of Michigan. His ties to MSU, as well as his work experience, will be a tremendous asset to our program,” Merchant said. “He was mentored by one of the best coaches in college men’s basketball in Keith Dambrot, the current head coach of Duquesne University. His numerous roles during his tenure with Coach Dambrot will transition well to his new position on our staff. We look forward to Desmond’s contribution and dedication to Michigan State women’s basketball.”

Young’s duties will include leading the video coordination team that breaks down film for scouting purposes, as well as MSU practice and game film. He will also be assisting with recruiting throughout the course of the year.

“I'm so thrilled to be a Spartan and to be a part of the MSU family. Michigan State is like home to me. With my hometown being only 35 minutes away and my father being a Spartan alum, I grew up a huge Spartan fan and being hired at MSU is a dream come true,” Young said. “I am so thankful to Coach Merchant for giving me the opportunity to be a part of her staff. I look forward to contributing to the continued success of Spartan women’s basketball.”

Young comes to Michigan State after one season as Director of Player Development/Video Coordinator for the men’s program at Duquesne University. Prior to Duquesne, he was a graduate assistant with the Akron men’s basketball team from 2015-17.

The Grand Blanc, Michigan, native began his college basketball career at Eastern Michigan before transferring to Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan. He finished his career as Adrian’s 11th-leading scorer with 1,243 points in three seasons, leading the Bulldogs in scoring as both a junior (18.5 ppg.) and senior (20.5 ppg.).

He graduated from Adrian with his degree in physical education/exercise science in 2009. He also earned his master’s degree in sports science/coaching from Akron in the spring of 2017.

Young also coached at the high school level and worked as a trainer and coach for the National Basketball Academy in Denver, Colorado. He played semi-professionally for the American Basketball Association Colorado Kings before becoming a graduate assistant at Akron.

Young’s father, Michael, earned both his undergraduate and medical school degrees from Michigan State.
