Michigan State Football's Spring Showcase Nearing
Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith will look to lead the Spartans to a much-improved year this coming season. The Spartans had a rough season this past year, both on and off the field. But a new era began in November when Smith was brought to Michigan State in an effort to rebuild the program.
Smith became the head coach of the Oregon State Beavers in 2018 and, after a few miserable seasons, turned the program around. He cleaned the house, brought in plenty of new talent, and got new impressive assistants and position coaches. Upon his arrival at Michigan State, Smith brought eleven coaches/program staff from Oregon State, including multiple offensive and defensive coaches, a new general manager, and a chief of staff.
Another significant change for Michigan State's program was the addition of promising sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles and veteran lineman Tanner Miller through the transfer portal.
With the Spring Showcase arriving soon, the Spartans have to practice every couple of days to prepare the young players for the next level of play. This showcase matchup will be the first big test to see how well Smith can operate his new team and control both sides of the ball. Chiles and Miller were two of eleven transfer portal additions for the Spartans this season, but the program had 19 players leave in the offseason, so they still need to catch up on a few numbers.
After back-to-back losing seasons by multiple games, Smith and his new and improved staff will look to turn things around for the Green and White. The Spartans are projected to finish the 2024 season with a record of 3-6, making for an even worse season than the past two. Smith has little to lose but much to prove with low expectations.
The Spring Showcase, presented by Michigan Achievement Scholarship, will begin at 2 p.m. on April 20, with gates opening at 12:30 p.m. Admission is free. The event will conclude the Spartans' 15 spring practices.
Michigan State will open its 2024 season in Spartan Stadium when it hosts Florida Atlantic on Saturday, Aug. 31.
The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spartan Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
