Kudo: Michigan State Football Traditions
It’s the fall which means football should be under way right now.
The campus should be packed with thousands of tailgaters, bleeding green and white no matter where one goes.
Shaw Lane is packed with tailgates, everyone grabbing a drink, playing some yard games and preparing for the game.
Students are walking from their residence halls to the stadium.
From five-year olds to 60-year olds, everyone is there for one purpose.
To cheer on the Spartan football team.
Then the walk into the stadium. Students flood the gates, trying to get into one of the lower sections. The pink section is by far the crowd favorite. Taunt the opponent, celebrate a touchdown or tell Zeke the Wonder dog, “Good boy”, it’s the best place to sit during a game.
Then of course the introductions happen. The best mascot in the entire nation, Sparty, comes sprinting down the tunnel. He always does his set of one-handed pushups.
Right before kickoff, the fans all scream, “It’s a Beautiful Day for Football!” rain or shine. Cause in Spartan Stadium, it’s always a beautiful day for football.
No one can forget the energetic feeling of the season opener, whereby section, the stadium splits colors to green and white. The view is one that is engraved in every Spartan for life.
Any penalty the opponent gets, the student section instantly screams, “You can’t do that!” over and over and over. Or of course, “You left the whole team down!”
But by far, the one moment Spartan fans have chills running down their spine is the Go Green, Go White chant. 75,000 people screaming at their top of their lungs, “Go Green!”, “Go White!”
It’s something one can only witness at Spartan Stadium.
And by the end of the season, if a fan didn’t know the fight song, they’ll know it by heart.
They’ll know to, “Fight for the only colors, Green and White!”
Football is cancelled this year. But football might return in November. Football might return in January.
Football might return next fall.
But what Spartans know, is that they want their home back.
They want Saturdays back.
