Game 7: No. 1 Purdue 67, No. 8 Michigan State 62

  • Zach Edey opens the scoring with a dunk.
  • Boilermakers up 10-5 here early with 15:42 left in the first half of play. Edey has six of those points.
  • Boilermakers still ahead 15-9 with 10:40 to play in the first half. It's pretty much all Edey, who has 11 points and five rebounds already. One of college basketball's best players delivering on a big stage. Tyson Walker has five for the Spartans.
  • Purdue still up 18-10 with 7:54 left in the half. Edey still with 11, while Lance Jones is up to five points now for the Boilermakers.
  • Tom Izzo just said in a midgame interview on Big Ten Network that he's not happy about how this game is being officiated.
  • Spartans working to claw back but still down 27-23. Walker and Malik Hall with eight points apiece.
  • Quite a few players in a bit of foul trouble for both teams. Jaxon Kohler has three fouls for the Spartans, while Walker and A.J. Hoggard each have two. Myles Colvin has three for the Boilermakers, while Camden Heide and Braden Smith have two apiece.
  • Izzo calls a timeout with 48 seconds left. Spartans have the ball down 34-27. Edey just had another bucket for the Boilermakers. Up to 15 points now.
  • Walker got called for a charge. That's his third now this half.
  • Another offensive foul with four seconds left in the half. That one is on Hall, his second. Brutal.
  • And that's it for the first half. Boilermakers lead 34-27. Edey has 15 points and seven boards. Jones has eight and Colvin has five. Walker and Hall with eight points apiece for the Spartans, but both are in foul trouble with three and two, respectively. Spartans will have to navigate that as they look to stake a comeback.
  • The Boilermakers scored the first five points of the second half, but the Spartans got a couple buckets back. Purdue up 43-35 with 14:34 to play. Edey is up to 21 points and nine boards. Spartans just don't have an answer.
  • Technical foul called on Tre Holloman, but it doesn't result in a free throw for Purdue. Boilermakers lead 51-45. Game is getting a little chippy.
  • Mady Sissoko is coming up big on the offensive glass for the Spartans. Smith whistled for the foul with Michigan State in possession of the ball with 7:47 remaining in this one. Spartans are still within punching distance, down five at 52-47. Still a lot of game left.
  • Spartans are making this one interesting. Smith just traveled and it'll be Michigan State ball after the timeout. Boilermakers lead 56-52 with 3:22 to play. Walker hit a big 3 and is up to 13 points now. Hall and Holloman with 10 points apiece. Edey still the driving force for Purdue and is the team's only player in double figures with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Exciting finish upcoming.
  • Another travel by Smith. Carson Cooper had a dunk on the other end just before that. It's a slim 56-54 lead for Purdue now with under two minutes to play.
  • Walker ties it up with an elbow jumper.
  • Fletcher Loyer had the answer for the Boilermakers with a 3 from the left corner. Purdue leads 59-56 with 1:14 to play. Spartans will have the ball after a timeout.
  • Mason Gillis got a bucket for the Boilermakers, but Hoggard answered with a pair of made free throws on the other end. Purdue basketball with 27.8 seconds to play and up 61-58.
  • Unrelated Big Ten news as this one is going: Michigan says Juwan Howard is out as head coach.
  • Boilermakers hang on. They'll head to the semifinals tomorrow and will play Wisconsin, which beat Northwestern in the second quarterfinal on Friday.
  • Smith exited during the game with an injury. Matt Painter on his status: "He said it was his calf. He pulled a calf muscle or got hit in the calf or something like that. Then he said he was able to go, so obviously we went with him. I thought he wasn't the same. He wasn't as aggressive. He didn't try to get to his pull-up or drive very much. He was just solid out there. We'll see. Sometimes those things in the next day you're perfectly fine, and sometimes they get progressively worse. So we'll just kind of see what's going on and see how he's feeling tonight and tomorrow morning."

Game 8: No. 5 Wisconsin 70, No. 4 Northwestern 61

  • Boo Buie with a quick 11 points as the Wildcats open this game with a 13-8 run. 13:11 left to play in the first half.
  • Wow! Buie is on a tear. Already with 16 points as the Wildcats lead 21-10.
  • The Badgers are right back in it. Max Klesmit with a 3 that makes it a 23-20 game with 8:53 left in the half. Buie appears to be walking gingerly on his right leg. Seems to be OK though. Steven Crowl and AJ Storr have seven points each for Wisconsin.
  • Storr with a tough bucket and the Badgers are now in the lead, up 24-23. Part of a 12-0 run for Wisconsin.
  • The Badgers have completely turned this around. Crowl just hit a 3 and Wisconsin got a stop on the other end. Badgers up 33-27 with about a minute and a half left.
  • The Badgers take a 33-29 lead into the half. What a turnaround. Storr has 13 to lead the charge while Crowl has 10. They found a way to contain Buie after his early explosion, keeping him at 16 points. Brooks Barnhizer is the Wildcats' next leading scorer with five points.
  • Buie's 3 ties it a 38-38 here in the second half. He's up to 21 points now.
  • Storr answers right back with a 3 to put the Badgers back on top 41-38. Storr has 16 points now for Wisconsin. He'll be shooting free throws out of the timeout after being fouled on a drive by Buie. There's 15:24 left to play.
  • The Badgers lead 49-46 with 11:14 remaining. Storr up to 20 points; Buie has 24. Second game of the day here is another good one that should go right down to the wire. Nolan Winter shooting free throws after the timeout.
  • Crowl with a 3 and the Wildcats can't find an answer to Storr. Badgers lead 59-51 with 7:20 to play. Storr up to 25 points now, while Crowl has 17 and seven boards. Wildcats have been quiet outside of Buie, who has 24 points. Barnhizer has 10, but Northwestern is just 10 for 34 from the field outside from Buie. Buie is 8 for 13 from the field and 6 of 9 from 3, while the rest of the team is 1 for 11 from deep. Wildcats need someone else to step up.
  • Storr now with 30 points after a layup. But Buie answers right away with a 3 for Northwestern. He's up to 29 points now. Two great players going at it. Badgers lead 65-59.
  • The Badgers pull away for the victory and they'll play Purdue tomorrow in the semifinals. Storr with 30 points and six rebounds in a dominant performance. Crowl had 19 and Klesmit finished with 10. Buie with 29 points in a valiant effort for the Wildcats. Barnhizer finishes with 13.

  • Ohio State beat Iowa 90-78 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals.
  • The Illini won the lone matchup between the two teams back on Jan. 30, an 87-75 victory on Columbus, Ohio.
  • Buckeyes led by 10 points with 11 minutes to go but the Illini rally for the win to reach the conference tourney semifinals.
  • Minnesota native Jamison Battle had a chance to the game with a 3 but his attempt bounced off the rim and over the backboard with 1.7 seconds remaining.
  • Illinois got 18 points off the bench from Minnesota native Dain Dainja while Terrence Shannon led the way with 28 minutes

  • Nebraska took a 50-27 lead at the half and never looked back
